I'm going to build a PC for my parents, obviously they aren't going to be playing a ton of video games... maybe they will watch DVDs on occassion. What would be a good video card if I want to build them a fast machine that won't be used for playing games?

True. but you never know. i have the MX440. its alright, but its blown out of the water by anything over FX5700.

I'd suggest going with the FX5200 because you never know when you might need to upgrade. You never know what will come out that will need more video information (not manythings0 just be prepared.

just get a 5700LE like I got... no big performance but no big price tag eihter and if your dad decides he wants to tear up demons in Doom 3 it will run it ok enough in normal mode.

True true. I still say go with the 5200 if ur parents don't like games. or are gonna play things like Counter-Strike Maybe.

I would agree with you but I have seen the performance of the video card pull down the rest of the system. Especially if the parents are going to be doing any digital photos or recording their home movies from their camcorder... you know... parental type stuff. Besides... getting a better video card now will ENSURE you will never have to upgrade it again over the life of their computer.

Your right. You know what... Maybe you should get a 6200. Because if you do. Then you can wait for the 7000's and you'll be set for at least a year. They're only about 100 bucks.

here's the deal...

if it's an AMD CPU get an NVIDIA
if it's an INTEL CPI get an ATI or ATI Clone

Either way it will be better than what they will probably use to begin with and will have a little extra juice if they do need it. My mom needs a better graphics card... not because she games but because the grandkids come over to play their games and I don;t want em on my system.

Not nessicarily. My friend bought an ATI on his badarse rig. (9800Pro). and then he bought the BFG 5700LE 256MB. and it OWNED that friggin 9800pro. he's running a LGA 775 P4 3.0. So. maybe you mean the higher end cards? X Series?
