Best folding card for the money?

923 Views 26 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  H3||scr3am
I'm looking to build a dedicated folding rig. I currently bought a e2180/p6n combo from Nitteo.
So now I need to fill up the slots! Looking for a cost efficient card that puts out respectable ppd in the $50-$90 price range.
Also would need a recommendation for a power supply to power 4 of these said cards.

$50-$90 each? If you can't find any 9800GTs/8800GTs for that price, look for 9600GT or any 8800, those are terrific budget folders and should fall within your budget.

9600gso w/ 96sp. Those are easily the best bang/buck imo. Just got one from smasherbasher for $50+shipping and it does around 4000ppd stock.

These are a great buy too (aren't they basically rebranded 8800GSs?), but the problem can be knowing whether you're getting the old version or the newer one... the newer one has far fewer SPs and ain't all that good for folding compared to its bigger brothers.

It should say how many sp's it has on any website if you are buying new, and if you are buying used I'm sure whoever you are buying from must know. It's pretty easy to find out how many sp's a card has before you buy it.

Easy to tell the difference. If it is a 192 bit 384/768 mb memory card, it is a 96 SP card.
If it has 128 or 256 bit 256/512/1gig memory, it is the new 48 SP card.

I did see 1 card on newegg that said it was 512 mb and 96 SP a while back, but not sure if that was a typo or not.

Some of the "good" 768 mb cards are now using DDR2 memory though, not sure what impact that has on Folding, but on gaming it hurts.

I would get THIS 9800GT. $89.99 shipped.

Memory bandwidth usually doesn't have all that much effect on folding, so the type of memory is really the last concern when buying a card dedicated for folding.
I would suggest less, better cards. For example, if your pricing 50-90x4, so lets say you have $300-320. I would look into getting some used 9800GTX/GTX+, or 8800GTS 512MB. 3 of those will be best since they have 128SP.

PSU:
A 500W, like the Antec EA500, can handle 4 8800GS/9600GSO

Anything above that I would go with a 750W. I would suggest getting a Refurb CoolerMaster Real Power Pro for $51. http://cmstore.coolermaster-usa.com/...roducts_id=102
I use two on my 4xGX2 rig. That will be good enough to run up to 4 8800GTs, or 3 9800GTX+s.
8800GSs 8800GTs 9600GSOs 9800GTs 9800GTX+s

I myself find that 9600GSOs and 8800GSs are great buys

OK, I did not think it did, but was not positive.

Ok, so if I chose the 3 gtx+ route, will all 3 or even 4 of them be able to fit on the p6n board? Being that they are dual slot cards.

Yes, you can fit up to 4 of them, but they will not fit in a standard case with 4 dual slot cards.

The DDR2 cards have diminished PPD. I could only get 3200PPD w/max o/c on a 384 pt WU. I second Blupupher with the Sparkle 9800GT being the best deal on efficient folding cards

Best bang for your buck would be a used 8800gt, they frequently go for $80 shipped or less, and get excellent ppd.
