Best headphones for Positional Audio?

There's been lots of discussion about which headphones have the clearest sound, most accurate sound, etc..

But what about which are best for positional audio? something that can be as important in games as a good frame-rate.

There's the X-Fi CMSS-3D Surround system which can simulate surround sound on headphones.

then there are special headphones like Dolby Headphones, SRS Headphones & SRS CS Headphones.

Open headphones are usually viewed as being the better sounding, but i've noticed a lot of "surround sound" headphones are closed ear. Do closed ear headphones have some sort of advantage in positional audio?

What are some headphones you've all tried & how accurately did they simulate surround sound, for positional audio in games?

I remember reading somewhere that that depends largely on your audio card + drivers...

I agree. I have the A700 and they are amazing, I can only imagine how much better the open version is.

The reason most "surround sound" headphones are closed is that they use multiple speakers at each ear to simulate a surround sound system. Unfortunately they are usually made poorly or cheaply. A big problem is to put that many speakers in, they have to use smaller ones so you lose quality and depth there.

I would argue that my DT880/600's have better imaging than the AD700. If the Soundmagic PL-50 IEMs had a headphone-like soundstage, they would be my choice for gaming as they are imaging monsters for the price.

But yes, positional audio depends on a combination of imaging and soundstage and the Audio Technica AD700 is a very good sweet spot price-to-performance wise for it.

AD700

I also have the RX900 and have tried out the RX700 and both are excellent for positional audio when used with CMSS3D. The RX700 is probably the best value but if you can spend the money go for the AD700.

And generally open cans have a wider soundstage, but this is not always the case. There are some open cans like Grados which have a closer soundstage than my RX900's which are closed.
I had read in reviews the HD-555 had a good soundstage. no1 has mentioned those, are they noticeably worse than the AD700 at producing accurate positional audio?

AD700s just have a much wider soundstage than HD555s, but HD555s are really good regardless.
