I assume the other processor you're purchasing is a socket 478 as well? Keep in mind "newer" P4's were LGA775. Why are you upgrading a P4?

yes its a 478. its a 3.2GHz one and im upgrading the processor only cuz i dnt have enuf $ saved up for my beast machine im buying...so its just like patching it up...
As stated before, the Mugen 2 is your best bet.

Compatibility:
Intel®:
Socket 478
Socket T / LGA775
Socket LGA1366
AMD®:
Socket 754
Socket 939
Socket AM2
Socket AM2+
Socket AM3
Socket 940

When you upgrade the Mugen is there for you.

Mugen 2 will be the best of modern coolers.

Yep, the Mugen 2 is awesome, it is supposed to cool on par with the Xigmatek Dark Knight, which I had and cooled excellently. And the best part is, when you buy a new mobo, you can move the Mugen over due to the wide support list

ok. thanks! rep for all!
For socket 478, this would be the best... Thermalright XP-90

This fan is still carrying my 2.4ghz @ 3.6ghz Northwood.

I have an XP-90c(all copper) w/ a thermaltake 9cm blue LED fan mounted to it. Had it on a couple different OC'd s939 machines, just sitting in my parts cabinet now. Amazing cooler in it's day.

System #3 in my signature has this cooler on it: http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-XPS-Socket-...item3c9fefd7a1

It's a P4 socket 478 overclocked to 3.3Ghz and it never even gets warm. I would just get the one I linked to and save your money. No sense in putting a bunch of money into an out dated system.

But the Mugen 2 isn't expensive.

It's $37, outperforms that cooler by a massive amount, and is compatible with current sockets as well.

But my point was that I'm sure that the OP won't be able to do any serious OC'ing with his sig rig, so all that is not needed. I'm guessing that that is an OEM board an probably can't up the cpu vCore anyways.

Compare it to putting a radiator out of a Ford F-350 Super Duty into a Dodge Neon. Would it run cooler? Sure. Does it really need something that extreme? Absolutely not.

In the case that he should get a new system anytime soon (eg. ~1year), chances are the Mugen 2 will work on that system as well.

By the way, the Dell cooler you linked to does not appear to come with a fan.

A fan would cost him some money as well.

$3.49 and 4 zip ties.

Good point about the cooler being able to be used in a new system though.

P.S. Mine has NO FAN on it either and still runs cool. Believe it or not. When I crack the case open... I was like "Huh?"

Asus P4S800D-X? that means Socket 478, then I'd choose the AF7 Pro

The Xp-90 was made for socket 478... and cools way better than Af7 Pro for the same amount of money.

I accidentally purchased a zalmann cooler off of ebay for a LGA775, instead of losing money on selling it or going through the hassle of returning it, I modified it.

I can go to 3.4 on this, but is not stable due to crappy board vcore issues. Temps do not go above 40C at full load, with ambient temps around 20C.
