Best way to do this?

I just got done fixing my computer by losing everything and reinstalling windows, it sucked. To make sure this doesn't happen again i would like to know the easiest way to back stuff up whether it be RAID 1 where i would get another hdd or would that not help with a big crash? Is there a way to burn everything on a cd now and then that i could do a total restore to it no matter what? Any suggestions are helpful. I am just another OCer who doesn't wants to avoid getting screwed by microsoft problems.
Thanks

Norton Ghost makes an image of the entire hard disk on a couple of CDs (depending on how much you save), but you really don't need to back everything up, just the important files you want to keep. I've considered going out and getting a cheap 20-40gig external drive to store my backups, but they're still too expensive.

I don't care about files it just sucks to have reinstall and set up my settings and stuff, even the little things like wallpaper to audio settings are a pain i would like to be able to keep a back up disk of all of this info so if my computer does crash i can set it back where it at least has my basic programs with a working OS. I would like to be able to recover everything rather than having to fix xp then load a bunch of documents and programs from disks.
