Hi guys, I had some of those copper ram heatsinks on my video cards ram, the card died so I'm rmaing it. I used heat to get the heatsinks off with out damage but of course I got this crappy thick gum like stuff left on the memory. How do you guys go about getting it removed? I read acetone?, More heat and a plastic knife or something maybe? I dont want to cause damage or scratches of course. Thanks!

Rubbing alcohol would probably work
I would imagine the same way as a CPU. 90 percent alcohol , coffee filter to wipe.
ok thanks for the info. I gave msi a call again and the guy basically said it wont matter for the rma. Its cosmetic. as long as there is no physical damage. so I guess I wont bother to remove it all off but For the future... Its good to know

For the future it is also good to know not to call Sapphire and a few others telling them you took off the stock cooler some are okay with it but most are not, they could deny/cancel any rma for that.

Oh I know lol. I call and ask the info first and if all is well then request the rma after. I originally said I took the cooler off to redo the thermal paste and put memory sinks on. which he was fine with. Then I later on tongiht called asking about the thermal pad left overs on the memory, He dont know anything beyond my first name and said its all good....

I know that you deff dont want to give info first then tell them for them to cancel the RMA lol better off sending the card in under the hopes of it going through anyways than telling them and having it revoked...

Oh and at that my old saphire 5850. I RIPPED OFF A CHIP on it LOL

and rma'd it. I put a mem sink on a lil wee mosfet or something way too small and used way too much super glue

Told them I had it sitting for a while and never used it and finally went to use the card and it wont work, idk why. And sure enough... They sent me a new card working, Perhaps I got lucky

#2 pencil. Rub the vram chips with the eraser. You then can give them a final wipe with a q-tip and some 99%.
Goo gone is entry level best. But Key90 wax and grease remover followed by high grade rubbing alcohol is fullproof. Key90 + high % alcohol will result in a Naked as new surface. Key90 is from Keystone is automotive paint grade cleaner.

Hm I'd be worried about it eating away at stuff. more specifically the plastic perhaps lol, Have you used it your self and had good luck? i know rubbiing alchohol works good for cleaning but doesnt work good for the goo-ey stuff
Surprised more people don't know this.

Cheapest, most effective adhesive remover is lighter fluid. Is absolutely miraculous removing adhesive residue left from tape, glue, thermal pads, etc. Cheap and easily available too. Be sure to clean up with alcohol afterward.

Not butane. Lighter fluid as in the little cans you can buy at a grocery store or drug store .... the stuff people fill cigarette lighters with - like old Zippos, etc.

With almost all new cigarette/cigar/pipe lighters being disposables made of plastic, the brands such as Zippo and others may not be familiar to you but long ago (pre 1980) almost all cigarette lighters were made of metal and were not throwaways. They could be refilled for years or even decades. Sometimes, they became treasured family heirlooms.

Even today, most grocery stores or drug stores here in the USA still have cans of lighter fluid available, but you may have to ask for it. I just bought one about a year ago for just this purpose.

ill attest to this, i got a zippo from my father handed down to me on my 20th birthday, it was my great grandfathers and bears his initials engraved on it. i still light cigarettes with it, all you have to do once a year is replace the wick for 60 cents. and a can of lighter fluid here is like 6 bucks and goes half a year. way more value than a $2 disposable lighter that you go through 50-70 of in a year.

oh your talking about that other stuff you use with stuff like a wick?. the lil cans I know of are compressed butane of which you refill them plastic lighters with... I do know you can buy the other type of lighter fuel in the soft plastic bottles
Many solvents can have a negative effect on the PCB so start small.... or use something known to be safe on PCBs. This is what I use

Indigo Xtreme Clean Non-Conductive Thermal Surface Cleaner - 30mL (XC-01)

GooGone. Works every time.

If in Canada you can not find GooGone, then get lighter fluid.

Yea I use it all the time. Its super safe and super effective as it has to comply with Auto Body regulations...which are insanely strict(it has to be able to be applied to plastic and metals with ZERO side effects). I used it first to remove the THICK gooey residue left over by the stickers on monitors and good lord that stuff is amazing. Now I use it to initial clean anything pc related then use some high grade Alcohol to finish it off.
Use the 70% alcohol from the pharmacies. Just dip it in some q tips and wipe away the residue.

Unfortunately, if you use alcohol alone on residue left after removing something stuck on with adhesives (like thermal tape or thermal pads with adhesive on one side) you are likely to be scrubbing for hours. Alcohol is wonderful for removing things like thermal paste, but the sticky residue left from adhesives and glues is a different story. Lighter fluid, or as someone else mentioned, Goo Gone does the job in seconds - literally. Try either one instead of alcohol the next time you have adhesive residue to remove. Believe me, your hands will thank you for it!

Sure is. I use it the same way with alcohol after words.
