Best way to transfer files to other hard drive?

243 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mastertrixter
Currently I have my previous SG 250GB hard drive installed with Vista on it of coarse. I would like to save some files and transfer them to my new hard drive the WD 640GB. But whats the best and safest way to do it? Drag them to the other hard drive in a folder? +1 to anyone that helps.

Thats what i do just stick the other drive in and copy all the files you want to transfer over, if you want to copy the entire drive i would mirror it using acronis true image or norton ghost.

If you are not having any issues with either drive I would simply just drag them over and copy them. I would stress that you back up your files on a few DVD's as well (at least the important things). I have been bitten once too many times by not burning things to a DVD. Cheap insurance and you can be confident in the knowledge that your files are safe somewhere in the event that either drive dies on you.

Okay thanks both of you +1! I just hoped that once I install Vista on the new HD I wont loose my saved files.

I wouldn't have any other drive plugged into the computer, but no. You should make sure the 640 is set as the main boot drive one you do put the old one in, and then boot up and copy over what you want. I don't think you need some of the core Windows stuff, so a complete drive mirror isn't needed. Just browse through your my documents if you want saved games or music files.

Anth,

Something else to consider...not sure if you have done this or not but if you are going to run two HDD's you may want to consider doing a complete backup. I have did this when I built the rig once the drivers and "clean installation" was first done. It saved my butt twice when having to go back and reinstall everything. Below is a link on how to do this....worked like a charm for me....

If anything it certainly saves a great deal of time....just something to consider.

as stated above make sure you set the 640 as the primary boot drive in your bios. load windows on it. copy everything you want from the 250 then wipe it and use it as a backup or whatever
