You can make a good argument for just about any point, but I've always felt that Alpha Centauri was the pinnacle of PC gaming as well as the Civ series, so 1998 for me.

1998 wasn't just the best year for pc games, it was basically the best year for games ever. On the PC we had - Half-Life, Unreal, Rainbow 6, Grim Fandango, Starcraft, Baldurs Gate, Fallout 2, Thief, and Might and Magic 6.

Look at that, that's just for pc, but seriously that list has several all time pc games on it.

N64 owners also had a mostly good year, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time came out. I am sure there were a few more decent games, but just having that Zelda game, the highest rated game of all time was pretty awesome for us 64 owners at the time. I took the bus to EB 30 mins there and 30 mins back to just to get it.

BUT WAIT! Another ultra classic game came out in 1998 too! Metal Gear Solid for psx.

All said in done, 1998 was easily the greatest year for gaming in my life time, but 2004 and 2007 came really close, specially 2004.

2001-2006 were my fav PC gaming days
