BF:Badcompany Beta... how is it?

1342 Views 25 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  bucdan
Some questions for all you lucky beta players out there about BC2.

How are the graphics? How do they compare to cod4/mw2? Are there only desert maps or are the maps more varied?

How does the game feel? Is the combat really fun? Is the game well balanced?

Are you super excited for release? Is this going to be the new it game?

I'm lovin' it.

Graphics are nice, I haven't played MW2 but I prefer these over COD4. I only demand modest graphics though. I'm probably not the best opinion on that. It's very sandy looking. Lot's of sand and white colors. Albeit the only map is basically a dusty city on the water.

The game plays well. I'm terrible at FPS's with a console controller though. It's like, "playing a PC game with a console controller."

Combat seems to be well balanced through the four classes, Assault, Medic, Engineer, Recon. Assault is the BF2 assault class plus ammo packs; Medic is basically support with health packs (a good thing because now medics are slower), the packs are one-per-kit regen style like 2142. Recon is sniper rifle with some perky gadgets like the "sonar grenades", C4, and artillery phone. Engineer is engineer plus anti-tank, I like that. It also gets some BF2 Spec Ops-like weapons too. There are even weapons (shotguns and WWII guns) that can be used with any kit.

The combat feels great. Grenade spamming is a non-issue now, nor is noob tubing. The toob is great for destroying walls and uncovering enemies. Tanks are definitely a concern for the enemy. They are powerful, but I think they should be and aren't too overpowered.

The Beta's game type is the same as the BC1 demo. One team is Assault and has to plant bombs on two positions before their tickets run out. The Defense just has to prevent this and run the Assaults tickets down. This can be tough to maintain as the buildings can pretty much be leveled leaving no cover for the defense. However, I have been on a winning Defense. There is a definite need for teamwork.

I am excited for the release! I've kept off from buying MW2 because of this beta. I am waiting for the PC version. It should have improved graphics and the prone function! (yes, prone is not possible on console) I think this is trying to be a little more arcade-y than the old BF2 (I think smaller maps and no jets shows this) and BF3 has been confirmed as in development.

Hope that gave you something you wanted to hear

That was good, +1. I too am waiting for the pc release. Any one know if this game will have a lean function?

More thoughts are welcome, rep to all who tell it like it is.

I would guess that it won't have lean. I don't think it's necessary in this one; I mean I sure wouldn't want it to create a hitbox glitch. Maybe they should save it for BF3 or maybe they'll add it just because MW2 took it out
Either way, I would eventually like to see it implemented.

i dont know about you guys, but im kinda bummed that you cant go prone, or is that only going to be the "issue" in the console version?

You can't go prone!?!?!?

Not in the console version.
I love it. But yeah, there is no prone in the beta. I assume there won't be in the final release either. For Playstation, anyway.

But it's very fun, I highly recommend it. There's only one map right now (unless I've been getting shafted and they always put me on the same map...), and it's a bright sandy map like Heady mentioned.

And he's very right about the grenade launchers, I think they may even be a bit underpowered if anything. They're actually kind of hard to use effectively, it's difficult for me to shoot things at a distance, at least compared to CoD4 or MW2. Which is probably a good thing. And they don't do as much damage as in CoD4/MW2. But they are good for taking advantage of the destructive environment.

Assuming the other maps in the full release will be decent maps, I think it will be a game worth getting (if you like the Battlefield style of gameplay). I'm sure I'll get it.

This sounds awesome. I enjoyed CoD4 for a bit, but it got old. But Battlefield has never gotten old for me.

I am now drooling over this game. Thanks for the info.

Prone will not be in either version.

But, having seen BC2, I don't think it requires it. For a bigger game like BF3, it might well do however.
Honestly i didn't think it was that great.

My friend gave me his key cuz his ps3 psu died.

Im not a fan of shooters on consoles so this game pretty much had everything that i hate lol. main problem being you are on a HUGE map and there is only like 16 people in the game. Once the game gets going and your team moves up it still keeps spawning you at the beginning of the map. It wouldnt be so bad if sprint was actually a normal button but it's select.

the squad leading is kind of pointless because the **** is so linear. theres only 1 point u can ****ing attack so why do i need to tell u which point to attack. no, you cannot go behind enemy lines and cap other points you have to cap them in order.

besides that ****ers always come to your spawn point and camp in some tower. why would you put a sniper tower right next to the spawn point? it is nowhere near any actual objective. after dying to the spawn camping *** 500 times i finally managed to kill him with a grenade because there was no way to hit him with a bullet not to manage i suck at shooting on consoles.

anyways i guess it probably boils down to whether you like console shooters or not. personally i think battlefield 2/2142 on pc are a lot better... but then again bc2 is very similar to those games so it might not be so bad ON PC. they better have ****ing dedicated servers and at least 64 players

im just hoping the console stuff doesent plague the pc version. in BF2 all i did was rove around and cap points that noone was paying attention to. that linear cap stuff is retarted all people do is camp every choke point and nade spam the doors to the point they know u are trying to cap.

Correction: It has 24 players on a map. And the maps are huge, but you're only ever playing at one section of a map at a time. You focus on one point, then advance if the point is captured by the offense (or retreat back to the next point if you're on defense). Plus, there's vehicles, so it's not like it takes forever to travel places.

Another correction: Sprint is NOT select, at least not for me. For me, it is clicking in the left stick (L3), just like every other FPS (that has sprinting). You should go into options and see if you can adjust your settings. As far as I know, Select doesn't do anything (although I guess I haven't ever pressed it.

You can still use tactics if it's one point. You can go around to a side, flank them, or coordinate vehicle attacks, or whatever. There's lots of reasons for squads. And if you don't like them, then don't join a squad. It's not like they're detracting from the game being there. Also, you can spawn on your squad mates. That's the biggest thing. So if your squad is close to a point and you are about to spawn, you can spawn with them so you don't have to start from your base point and travel up to them. That's probably the biggest advantage of squads in this game.

Also, if he can shoot you, then you can shoot him. It's not like he can shoot through a wall and you can't. Plus, there's not sniper towers near your spawn... there's one just outside of the first base, but that's on YOUR side. And if someone gets in it, you can blow up the tower with a tank (it will fall apart and he will die), or you can just shoot him with a Hummer turret (or your own gun...). It's really not that difficult. I've never really had problems with spawn killers. I mean, every game has some. But if they kill you once, they shouldn't be able to kill you again unless you suck. While you're waiting to spawn, it shows your spawn point, and you can watch where he is, then you already know where he is by the time you spawn. Plus there's a "killcam" (not really a killcam, it shows the player in real time after he killed you, not an instant replay of your death).

But yeah, I agree that FPS's are much better on PC, but it's still fun. I can still enjoy a decent console shooter. And this is a good one. But I think 64 players would be way too much for this game, at least with the game mode available in the beta. You're only attacking one spawn point at a time, and it's already pretty hectic with only 24 players. Especially when you have tanks and Hummers with turrets in the mix.

I actually did mention this on another forum. You have to really hit the target within a good distance to get a kill. I'd rather they be slightly underpowered than overpowered and become a primary. Their main purpose for me has been destroying walls from a distance, knocking down those coverspots for the defense.

I know they're are mouse-like PS3 controllers out there, but I still think the PC version will be the best of all. I'm sure many BF2 faithfuls will get it and the clanplay will be large. This is just a guess, but I think the amount of microphone users will be more prevalent on PC than on PS3. That's pretty important to me because this game really has the capacity for great squad gameplay.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think sprint is unlimited in this game. I don't think that's a negative as the speed seems a bit slow, and there is a perk but then again it takes up a perk slot. It lessens my anger at my sniper teammates that hang back on Assault or having to spawn in the "uncap".

I'm pretty sure they have dedicated servers for the consoles too. I think the beta plays on some of them. I can't say for sure about the PC player limit, but EA is making the PC version specific for its PC gaming fans and controllable server sizes is something they are probably managing. Some game types wouldn't work well with 64 players, for example the beta's gametype.

Yeah, I would rather then be underpowered than overpowered. But it's kind of annoying when I think I've got someone then it just does a bit of damage, and I still have to use a substantial number of bullets to down them, when I assumed they were on the verge of death.

And I agree, if you're gonna play with a mouse, just go ahead and get it on PC. No reason to get it on PS3 if you want to play with kb/m.

And I don't think sprint is unlimited, but it is pretty long and it regenerates pretty quickly (BF2 was kind of annoying when you would get stranded and everyone would ditch you and take all the vehicles haha). But I could be wrong, it might be unlimited, I'm not really sure. I think I recall my character stopping sprinting, but I'm not 100% on if that was the limitation on sprinting, or if it was just me accidentally letting off L3.

Its pretty nice.
I am TERRIBLE playing fps's with controllers.
I used to be good, but, after using M/KB for a long time, its night and day.
FPS stays above 30, which is great.
Gameplay is solid, guns are nice and variable.
I can't wait to try this out on PC.

it seems linear because that is the game mode that is set out for the beta... bf series always has ctf thats when its open spaced. the size of the maps will be perfect for 32 players, dont expect this game to be a big release like bf2,bfvietnam, bf1942 where it is 64 players, we'lll wait for bf3 for that.
