Ok.. I was looking for a new laoptop and/or project and needed a spark. .. Something that I found interesting and fun. How about a former Largest Laptop screen size holder ? Yes! ... Played with Tonka trucks growing up .. Love the Budweiser Clydesdales.. etc. etc. etc.... You get it.... Big is Good. ...Bigger must be better.

Anyway.. started a search for a Toshiba p505 and snagged a used one today for a decent price ... 18.4 inches of resolution goodness.

Of course... What's the point of having a big brawny screen without some big brawny internals to match? Ver-Dad ?

I have been trolling the Passmark website and was looking at the Socket S1 benchmark list :

I've got an Old T7200 powered Core 2 right now .. Im just not going to feel like Im moving forward without improving a good knotch over that.

My T7200 runs cool ... from that aspect it is nice- that's what I admire about it, I can put my hand by the exhaust port and it just makes me feel like I've got a well running machine.

Im not really here to debate benchmarking validities ... I use Passmark because I can get around their sight quickly, it is organized to my liking and I can usually load a Chip MFG name and
a CPU model number into the Google search box and get a direct link to the Passmark results page... quick and dirty? ...Maybe,... When doing initial evaluations Im looking for a quick link that gives me a ballpark idea of CPU performance.and I've found it helpful.

The RM-74 has a Passmark rating of 1114 .. If I had a wish list it would be to be in the Passmark 1800 to 2600 performance rating range running stable and cool. Im in the p505 right $$ wise.. I will likely max out RAM and pick up an SSD .. I'd like to add a better CPU as well for the whole pkg.

I would like to hear some opinions on what chip to upgrade to and why .. if you've got biases let me know why. I've not owned an AMD machine Im not nearly as versed in their products as I know
some of you are and that is exactly why I am here... I know some here have tons of AMD experience. What say you?

Ok.. I have been digging through AMD specs today and may have a viable canidate to replace the RM74 .. the Phenom II Mobile N970.

The N970 is about $60 used on Ebay .. Will it work? The idea would be SSD, Max Ram, Cooling enhancements, 2000 to 3000 Passmark Benmarked CPU in the Suitcase like P505 Media chasis ...

Can some of you AMD guys chime in ? The Black Editions are looking viable but they are 45w ...

Just acquired a P505d and was Googling around for info on COOLING MODS.

Did you ever find a CPU that would swap in?

P505d uses AMD RM-74 and Radeon 3200 (RS780M), RM-74 makes direct contact with heatsink, GPU does NOT, instead reling on IIRC a "thermal pad" maybe 2mm thick.

I thought about Siamese'ing a 2nd heat pipe assembly to the current one to give it extra MASS and CAPACITY and copper shim on 3200 GPU /thermal putty...

The various Sockets S1 were not electrically compatible with one another. You can't install an S1G4 processor into a Socket S1G2. You can only use the best S1G2 processor that is available, unfortunately. The Turion X2 Ultra ZM-88 is the best one that seems to have existed, but trying to locate one seems to be a challenge. You can get a ZM-87, 100 MHz slower, on eBay for $33 right now. But it only scores 1218 on Passmark, so you're looking at a 10 percent improvement, tops. Your T7200 scores 1178, so the ZM-87 would just barely beat it.

Another thing you might be able to do is a motherboard swap. Toshiba made that laptop in both AMD and Intel configurations, and it's possible that you might be able to swap in an Intel motherboard. The Intel P505's seem to have come with Socket P, which means you could potentially install something as fast as a T9500 (about 60 percent faster than a T7200) or even an X9000 (80 percent faster).
