BIOS update problem

1273 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Jus'Chillin'
I tried to update with ASUS EZ Flash but it didn't see my USB key, I've got a USB PCI card installed. (USB ports on my mobo are not working and I'm going to RMA it tomorrow but I want to re-install windows tonight)

So I reset the bios to default and used ASUS update utility but CPU-Z and Core Temp are showing 2 cores and 4 threads.

I have no floppy drive on my PC but I have a USB floppy.
What's the best and easiest way to flash the BIOS?
OR should I just re-install windows with the BIOS the way it is?

Why do you want to update your BIOS before installing Windows?

Because it's showing only 2 cores not 4

Shouldn't be a problem just for installing Windows. Board probably has other problems besides USB not working.
I just want to check if windows is the problem before I RMA.
If the mobo is that bad I would be best just to leave it off, incase it damages something.
Nothing mentioned involving either of the issues in the BIOS history. Probably just a bad board.
I just dont want to go through the hold process of RMA and it not being the board
Obviously make sure the bios is an official release before RMA; even though some other releases are sometimes better.
If you want a quick answer, check to see if the bios is instructed to pick up devices rather than your O.S. If it is failing to see drives, it may be a corrupted bios.
Best way to update is via USB, esp with no floppy drive. Re-installing Windows without checking on the bios pick-up could be a waste of your time.

But if the USB ports are not working and not picking up the USB PCI hub in ASUS EZ flash, can the bios be updated from CD?

Never updated that way, but sounds like a bad board to me. Before trying that, resetting the CMOS would be worthwhile (if not done already).

Yeah I've done that already. Just after updating the BIOS from my eSATA drive with ASUS EZ Flash 2 and I'm still getting only 2 cores.
So I think I'll just re-install windows now to make sure before I RMA.

Was just about to suggest the same. Probably spend less time doing so and be in a better position to know.
