Birthday money

Ok so i got some money today, $154 cash and a $50 gift card for Target. ( http://www.target.com/ )

Now first of all, what could I use that gift card for?

- Fallout 3 is on their site for $40, and F.E.A.R. 2: project origin is $20. might get one of those or possibly another game. Maybe clothes.

But the important part (and why i am in this part of the forum) Is what to spend my cash on?

I have been wanting to nab a Phenom II x4 940be because its so inexpensive and would help get rid of that bottleneck. No need on getting a 955/965 because DDR3/AM3 aren't going to be something at all practical for the next few years of my life. Then for christmas i could grab a mugen 2 cooler and get my 940 up to respectable clock speeds. Also, my 1066 RAM wont run at full speed with my AM2 processor which is why an AM2+ 940 would help there as well as pretty much improving my system and making it more evened out.

Option 2: HAF-922 case. Don't need a 932 however. the 922 is $90 shipped on newegg brand new and has everything i need. the 932 is awesome but my area is a bit cramped. Also, i already have 2x 120mm fans i could put in it, the 932 requires more than that to really get the most out of it. I can either pop both fans into the ventilated side panel or one there and one at the bottom and be very cool.

I want a new case mostly because my Apevia X-plorer has hit the wall for me to do stuff with. My complaints of it include my second hard drive (if ambient temps are high) reaching temps up to 53C. My power supply is not modular and my case does not allow me to hide any cables behind the motherboard. as a result most of my cables are stuffed around the back of my 5.25in drive bays, smothering one of my hard drives, blocking airflow and looking ugly. The case only supports 2x 80mm front intake fans that hardly help out because of their size and the cable problem. the 922 would let me route cables behind the tray at least and has a lot more space. Dust doesn't bother me too much as i blow out the inside of my case with an air compressor every 2 weeks.

My video card in this case is right at the bottom of it with the fan just nearing the floor, not getting as good of an intake on its fan as it could.

If i buy the processor thats pretty much all my cash. I realize my 6000+ is a bottleneck but i run all games (except crysis during intense hardcore action) that i play just fine. The 922 however is $90 leaving me with $64 to spend on whatever or save until christmas comes around.

I am open to suggestions of other things but this is mostly where i think im going with this. Your advice and opinions are valued, thanks for reading.

Wings of War sounds like a flying game? All i really play are FPS games. Not that I am narrow minded, i actually try quite a few games that aren't FPS's but at the end of the day its all i really seem to enjoy and am cut out for.

Spend it on the 940 since you said you wont be needing DDR3 for the future.

Computers aside, you could take the giftcard from target and ask them to put it on a more useful medium... like CASH!

Haha if only you could do that. I'll probably go to a nearby target sometime within the next week or so and see if there is little crap i like i suppose, or games.

Only console i have is a PS2, and not really many games i want for it. maybe really old games i played many years ago, but they usually wouldn't carry old games.

Can you buy something from target worth about $50 than return it next day with the receipt and have them give you back cash? I've always wondered but never really tested if they would care that it was purchased with the gift card. Than you could get a 940 and a nice HSF together for the money.

no nice thinking but usually retailers give return refund on the same medum, which means he will get back his 50 dollar giftcard.

Buy a new monitor so you can take advantage of that 4870(and have enough desktop real-estate to actually do some work).

Ya think so?

I considered a monitor a while ago but figured i needed a processor first to even out my system.

When my parent's 19 inch monitor died they got this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-145-_-Product

from walmart it looks a lot better than what i have. It has DVI instead of VGA, its much larger as well. im jealous but also dissapointed because they use it at 1024 x 768 for everything with an 8600gt. :/

One thing i dont like about it is that from some angles or distances it has those odd unevenly lit areas. hmmmm.

I say you leave the monitor for a christmas idea your parents could buy you. If you go and upgrade that now, your performance in games will suffer some, and that 6000+ might just show its limitations.

If you must spend the cash all in one shot, the 940be would be an excellent upgrade. Not to mention you might be able to sell the 6000+ on ebay (since you don't have enough rep to do it here) and recoup some of that cash.

Otherwise, if there is nothing you want terribly right now, you can always save the cash for later. The prices of things should drop after christmas is over because people won't be buying like they are now.
Yeah I would also get the 940 be, a case can wait, perfromance is the most important. You won't be disappointed. My 940 BE handles anything I throw at it.
I too agree with everyone saying to get the 940, Might as well spend it on something like that, it's more important than a case if it's bottle-necking your system
If i don't update my BIOS to have the Phenom II and Athlon II support, will a 940 work ok? my motherboard is an AM2+ like the 940 but updating bios sounds like a real pain.

I also considered getting windows 7, as its $105 on newegg.

I'm not sure about biostar, but most manufacturers have a program that will allow you to easily flash your mobo instead of doing it the pita dos way (albeit safer if you know what you're doing)

I recently had to flash a foxconn, and they hid the program a bit, but with some digging around on their site, I flashed the mobo and rebooted. Really didn't take long at all, aside from finding the program.

Edit: They make it easy and give you a utility (Just follow the directions carefully. also linked)
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/t-s...s.php?S_ID=374

I wouldn't recommend trying to run the 940 on there without having the support for it (assuming you don't have it already)

Windows 7 = eBay = $14, problem solved.
