Very interesting read, nice interviews with guys from Bethesda, Crytek, Monolith, and Relic.

In early 2008, IBM embarked on a project to digitally simulate the cerebral cortex of such a small mammal at the Thomas J Watson Research Center. The test used 8,192 processors and 2.8TB of memory on the Blue Gene-L supercomputer to simulate the 22 million neurons and 11 billion synapses found in the16cm2 cortical surface of a rabbit's brain.

Simulating even primitive intelligence is extremely demanding, so how does a basic PC go about simulating human intelligence in multiple game characters at once?

Mimic part of a brain.

Not good man.
game AI isnt real AI, i mean if someone was shooting at me, id run away

I find it kind of funny that they bring in people from MIT to work on games.

AI is still AI whether it is in the games or anything else.

I think this is awesome stuff anything to make gaming more interactive is a plus in my book.

Oh I understand, I could just see some parent be furious that they sent their genius child to MIT just so he could work on computer games.

Parents don't care what their child branches off to as long as it something that makes them happy and puts a decent paycheck. If your sent to MIT your getting a good paycheck. Besides, the gaming industry is not going anywhere for a very very very long time.

I don't find that strange at all. Game developers use famous musicians/composers to make soundtracks for their games.

try telling that to all those parents who want their kids to be doctors or lawyers or something, some parents do completely care adn wont accept anythign less, and suprisingly its more parents than you think, fair enough sif listen to your parents but they still complain

Mine dont, they know better than to t y and tell me what i should do, but most people ive ever met have had parents pushing them ESPECIALLY when they go to a prestigious college etc then end up doing something that the parent thinks is beneath them or they just dont understand

If the game creators want to make their game better they should consider benching AI. I mean it has worked for the Pistons their last few games.

How do you benchmark AI? It is just a logic tree.

Uh, in all reality, that is the complete opposite of what parents want for their kids, parents want for their kids what the parents think is best for their kid and thats usually the wrong thing. Plus, Im playing off the fact that to most parents, computer games are evil, and thats why I would think theres bound to be a parent that would be upset.

I personally am not saying that there is anything wrong with being a game developer.

Tbh my parents really didn't like seeing me play for hours and hours every single day when I had school/university to attend, but the one thing they respect is that without computer video games (Diablo more specifically) they know I wouldn't be where I am now. And people can argue as much as they want, when you're not native to an english-speaking country, playing video games online (excepted for WoW and other localized MMOs) helps you improve your english coz you want to communicate with other players, and as such learn more about vocabulary, and then you might start getting on Vent or TS with other players, and that's where you start to really learn about english, and where you really start to improve yours.

One thing's for sure, if one day I get kids and they wanna play MMOs when they're 15+, I'd gladly pay for it as long as they play on english-speaking servers.

Didn't a study just show that 75% of parents thinks computer games can be positive?

I don't think any parent would frown on their child entering a multi-billion dollar industry and making decent money.
