OCZ Technology has announced its first solid-state drive to hit the market below the magic $100 price point - the Onyx.

While the Onyx - a 2.5" SATA II SSD - only offers a somewhat cramped 32GB of storage space, it could be a tempting purchase for those looking to speed up a boot drive or make their ultraportable laptop a bit more robust.

Yes, you can find the OCZ 30GB Vertex/Agility for under $100 but their MSRP are higher. The same could be said about the Kingston 40GB Boot and X25-V.

well its enough for me, all I would put on it is the OS. Looks very tempting, any reason not to buy it other then GB/$. It is very cheap, and I don't need bigger.

I think this is great. This will offer more initiative for other companies to either drop their prices to compete, or release their own budget SSD.

Depending on the quality of the build, this can be a very cheap setup for large databases, since RAM is too expensive. You can just shove 12 of these inside a 2U server and setup a RAID-10 and it will be screaming fast without making the server cost too much. I guess it all depends what sort of IOPS these things can do.

Why 10? The redundancy is pointless with SSD's

You know, when SSD drives replace HDDs in the future, and they have 500GB models for 50$. People that bought these are going to feel silly.

@Duckie: Just put it in bold and put something eye catching there before said sentence.

You bought your CPU for over $100.... won't you feel silly in a few years?

Why do they have to make SSD's so fast. I'd be very happy with a 50 dollar SSD that has .1 access time along with 100mb writes and read's.

Access time is what it's all about
