Those pesky science types at Georgia Tech just doomed us all by deciding it would be a great idea to teach robots how to deceive other robots. Naturally their work was sponsored by the military, because, you know, that kind of thing always turns out well for everyone.
...

It gets worse. The robots were effective at lying 100 percent of the time, according to BotJunkie:

It would be better if they thought the robots to lie to other robots, then the other robots detect the lies and top them with other lies, and the first robots do the same.

Yeah... This is only useful if the robots being lied to know how to detect lies...

If there were 2 robots that could speak, and knew how to lie AND detect lies, and knew how to learn, they would learn from each other until they became really smart.

Great, we're teaching computers how to deceive. Now you won't know if your overclock is unstable, or your computer is just deceiving you.

Depends whether the computer feels like working hard or not. Which is another thing, we need to teach our computers how to be lazy.

To test out the deception programming, the researchers had their robots play hide and seek. The hiding robot had a choice of three hiding spots, each with a set of markers in front of it. Recognizing that the situation could benefit from a deceptive tactic, the hiding robot would knock down markers in front of one hiding spot, and then go find a different spot, avoiding the markers. This technique fooled the seeking robot 100% of the time, as long as the hiding robot was able to knock down the correct markers.

Slight of hand?

or maybe the robots are so smart, they pretended to believe the lies. That way we don't feel threatened by them....

*Yawn* This robot "teaching" stuff is a load of horse dung. All they did was create an algorithm for one robot and then create another algorithm for another robot that the other one didn't account for.

To me, it doesn't seem like as much of a breakthrough as they make it sound. If I simplify it, it's just one robot designed to knock down markers and then hide in a different location, while the other robot is designed to follow the markers.

Now, if they built robots and taught the AI to tell a lie believable lie, that would be interesting.

No, we essentially taught the robots how to do the "follow the ball in the cups" street scam and taught another one how to suck at figuring it out.

Captain obvious, if robots knew how to learn they would keep learning until they got really smart

robots lieing and chosing to lie to other robots -> robots begin to lie to humanity to "test" it out -> robots begin becoming part of everyday life -> robots begin seducing our women and soon leads to less breading of the huan race -> humanity begins to fight said robots -> the matrix

im terrified at my work cubical right now......im waiting for the phone call "hello, Mr.Anderson..."
