Well, apparently at the norton forums there is a big deal about a PIFTS.exe, and one user is updating everyone constantly about what is going on. interesting stuff if you use norton.

source: http://chrysler5thavenue.blogspot.co.../piftsexe.html or http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/10/139229
edit: added slashdot reference XD

At zonealarm.org, one person reports talking with various representatives of Symantec for two hours without receiving any answer as to why inquiries posted on the Symantec forums were being deleted. The caller was told that PIFTS.exe is part of Symantec's update installation process, was denied any further information regarding the purpose of the file and was repeatedly transferred to a new representative when asking why inquiries about PIFTS.exe were being deleted from Symantec's forums.
UPDATE: The story was digg'd, but even digg is trying to cover it up!! link: http://chrysler5thavenue.blogspot.co...exe-story.html

So... no one knows what it is and Norton doesn't want to say anything... I'm so glad I don't have to worry?
AVG

I stopped with the Crapersky and Hackafee and Norton years ago...AVG for at least 4 years now with no Viruses no problems...and no bloat.
God forbid a company have secrets!

It is most likely a possible Norton exploit that they are keeping quiet; not some program that beams home credit card info to Norton, or the government.

McAfee just needs to go away, at the 2 organizations I have worked at that use it, both might as well not have any anti-virus at all. Infact the first place switched from Norton to McAfee and has had relentless virus issues after the switch.

The new Norton has been almost completely re-written, and is much much more effective (not to mention uses under 10mb of RAM).

Ha, I dont use antivirus. Never trusted them myself. I guess my speculations are right
The whole FBI thing is kinda sketchy though. I would think they would force windows to update not norton. You would cover more people if they went to microsoft.

Do your homework on Norton 2009 guys. Seriously.

The amount of resources it uses is minimal, there is virtually no performance decrease when using it, and it picks up nearly everything. Im happy to use it on my sig rig.

In your face, Norton lovers! Not only does Norton miss things because of poor design, but it misses things because of intent. Yay Symantec!

A little bit, but sounds fairly common for an exploit.

Could be it hijacks Norton's Liveupdate and tries to have norton connect to the server in Africa (or what ever is proxied off that) then downloads more nefarious stuff.

I doubt you get it just by having Norton, it is probably caused by some other nafarious software (AV 2009 any one?) that then downloads other stuff.

I quit using anti-virus after i saw the damage done by them. No anti-virus. Only a firewall, Window's firewall, and then Vista's own systems. Of course with common sense... there's no real need for antivirus to begin with.
No AVP on my rig for the last 3+ years and not one issue that wasn't created from me.

NOD32 has served me well since I left Norton and Mcafee.
It's a conspiracy!!1 LoL

That's an interesting blog entry though. Lots of links. It'll probably turn out to be nothing too crazy, but I'm gonna keep an eye on it, nonetheless. Thanks for posting.
