Bootable USB flash drive?

2079 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  SeanEE89
How can I make a bootable flash drive with my 1GB usb flash stick so I can reformat my new 120GB drive so I can put it into my old 20GB drive enclosure for my Xbox 360? Xplorer360 doesnt come with a feature/function to allow me to format it and I am having trouble figuring out how to do this... help please!

haha I'm taking the 20GB drive I currently have out of the actual enclosure and I'm placing my own 120GB drive into the enclosure. It's a lot cheaper, and I have all the data from my 20GB drive backed up. I just need to prep the 120GB drive so I can put all my data on it and hook it up to my xbox 360.

Use the HP program:

That's what I've done when needing to flash a 360 in DOS. It should make it bootable.

You could also try NTFS4DOS. This is why I go for the preformatted drives since sometimes it's confusing on the best method for flashing the disk drive to work on 360.

I'll try finding you a step by step guide.

Best method is using HDDHackr.

That site also has the hddss.bin that you need for the 120GB drive.

Edit: Realized you need to make your own.. Should give you steps on what to do. Try the HP bootable program or you can use iPrep I believe.

Scroll down and you can download the .RAR file.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I will try this stuff out when I get home. Will the hddss.bin on the link you provided work with my WD BEV? because it mentions "Original Samsung hard drives cannot be used to flash new WD 120 GB disk, it's currently unsupported". Should I be concerned about that?

Also will the HDD Hackr create the bootable drive and everything for me?

Below it also mentions how you can do everything manually to create the partitions. Is that a valid method to get this done also?

Either method works. Just use whatever is easier. HDD hackr won't create the bootable USB drive I don't believe. You need to use the numerous available methods to creating a bootable flash drive, either the HP program or by using any of the others. I used iPrep when I made mine.

I don't think those bin files on the link will work unless you have the same drive. It can't hurt to try though. If it doesn't work then all you'll have to do is create your own original hddss.bin file.

You should be able to use the 120GB bin file once I looked back..

Just use hddhackr and grab the 120GB file and try it.

I think I will give iPrep a try first.

Where do I find the hddss.bin though for the 120GB drive? also what do I do with it just place it in the new drive or do I run it?

The hddss.bin for the 120GB drive is on that page. That's the file you need.

You load that with HDDhackr like it says on that link.

You have to do it in DOS.

Alright I am still a little confused, but I think it'll be easier to understand and troubleshoot when I get home and get to actually work on all of this myself.

Now I did just try to use iPrep to get my USB drive ready only it keeps asking for the right firmware how do I go about getting that?

And when you say I have to do it in DOS do you mean in command prompt or when I boot from the bootable usb drive?

In DOS. Not in command prompt. You have to be in DOS from your bootable drive.
