Brand new Phenom II 720 BE - Initial Overclock and First Impressions

Unboxed, mounted and overclocked in the last 30 minutes. Latest BIOS installed (F4 Rev 2.1)

Used only the multiplier. Can only do 3.2GHz on stock volts. Needed 1.45V to run at 3.4GHz.

These are fantastic figures for this board and setup. The cooler can't really handle anything over 95W. At full load (Prime95, 15 minutes), overclocked, the chip hit 56C and stayed there. Idle temps 38. Will do a full 24h with Prime95 when I'm happy with my voltages.

Needed a slight volt bump for the NB. I don't think my memory and board get along. I can barely touch the ref clock.

Unstable after increasing the ref clock higher than 206. Even with my old chip, 206 was the limit. I am running the memory at 1066MHz 5-5-5-15. I haven't tried running it at 800MHz yet but I'll tinker with it some more and perhaps bump the ref clock up. Not sure if it's my board or memory holding me back - but I'll find out soon enough.

Crysis average FPS hasn't changed at all from my old chip. Same with Warhead. Do I need to re-install them? Haven't tested COD4 yet.

Thoughts, suggestions, critique - anything! If anyone has experience with this board, please share.

I've always gotten better performance from reinstalling windows after changing processors. I'm not sure if it is required but I think it helps a lot.

Realized with the new fan the PSU fan and CPU fan were fighting for air. Flipped the CPU fan and my idle temp is 30C and load temp is 50C (OCCT). Passed OCCT 1h at 3.2GHz 1.375 Vcore.

Just might end up doing that if I see no performance difference.

Edit: Yea something's definitely wrong. Getting an average of 17 FPS using Crysis Benchmark Tool with the same settings I always use. My Athlon X2 7750 BE at STOCK yielded 21 FPS.

1680x1050, 4x AA, DX10, 32-bit, default map, 3 rounds...wth is going on.
hmm ur mobo is probably holding you back. i'm sure i've seen some guys going 3.2ghz with stock volts. some even 3.4.

Currently at 3.3GHz stable (1h OCCT) with temp topping out at 60C. Idle as low as 38C.

This is using a 1.475 Vcore.

Yeah...definitely the board...that sucks. Still, those temps are good enough considering the tiny case and small cooler. Now to benchmark and see if this CPU is performing as should. There is already a decrease in performance in Crysis and Crysis Warhead.
Um...that's a little high on the Vcore there. I'm doing 3.6 stable on that voltage, although i didn't find 3.6 @ 1.475 feasible by merely raising the multiplier. Mess around with that FSB and hypertransport as well.

I'm currently at 224x16 = 3584

grats i have 720BE too
heres my current cpuz http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=525388 i only add .50 to my vcore... using gigabyte 790xUD4 mobo the bios option only let you add .25 increments on your vcore with out putting an actual vcore but software says 1.38 vcore
just dont mess with the fsb yet till you max your cpu
good luck

max stable for me is 205 x 18 = 3690 with 1.5v. Anything higher than 205 will not boot into windows even with 1.55v. It seems that max multiplier is 18 for my chip. I will try 18.5 later tonite and will post result.

Any idea wats the max ref clock, NB and HT speed for this x3 720 chip?

This is exactly why I believe my board is holding me back. Even with all other clocks locked at stock, raising the FSB over 206 will BSOD Windows on boot. Sometimes windows boots, but locks up on the desktop. Even with my old processor and old ram, this board seems to hate FSB increases.

It may also be the temps. The cooler isn't very good, so when the CPU is under load, the temps go up 25-30C. More specifically, from 38C-60C. That's a huge jump.

I've heard these Deneb chips like the cold.

Currently looking for the same answer. This is mostly dependent on your memory and board northbridge it seems.

You might want to invest in a nice 790GX or FX board then.

Waitin for a good, solid M.ATX board to come out. There is one 790GX out there now I think - some DFI board. Not really into DFI though

DFI's the overclocking king, funny you feel that way.

Yea i know. It's just I hear alot of horror stories about DFI's support.

Nice! Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it isn't available on Newegg.ca (canadian site). Oh well.

+Rep to all who replied. Limitation appears to be my mobo and not the chip.

I am in a similar situation. My board will only support up to 95w processors, and to hit 3.6GHz I needed 1.55v. I also needed to start increasing the voltage on mine once I hit 3.2-3.3GHz. The overall consensus on my "limited" OC was that it was my board (both the low TDP and the nvidia chipset)

I've been busy with school lately, but I'll try messing around with the reference clock and other multis sometime soon.

A new board would likely help, but personally I'm waiting for the new AM3 boards to come out before I get anything. Since my 720 still works, just wont OC quite as high as others.

Good luck

I agree with you. These x3 720 chip can oc like crazy with 790gx/790fx + sb750 board.

I have read that Foxconn is going to be releasing a 790gx am3 board soon. I know that ChrisB17 has been keeping a watch on that board too.

Hit 3.8Ghz so far, though i had to increase the Vcore to 1.5. I hit 3.6 fine with no Vcore increase, just changing the Multi. 4's the goal. Need to stress test later. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=525643

my guess is that rawz will fail occt test

i think i will stop @3.6
pc is acting fast enough @3.6
this is coming from 4600 user
who maxed @2.8 stable lol... ill post 12hr occt test @3.6 tomorrow
hope this will help other 720BE user

Wow...you managed to get 3.8 with 1.5v and even also without sb750 board? im impressed...i couldnt even change the mult to 19 with 1.55v. It will not boot to windows. Im using vista 64 ultimate.
