Throughout all of 2008, I made it my mission to test every high-performance CPU cooler that Benchmark Reviews received. The Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors did their part to separate the cream of the crop from our large collection of LGA775 coolers. In our previous Best CPU Cooler Performance article, Benchmark Reviews retired the LGA775 platform from its testing duties and made room for the up-and-coming LGA1366 socket. It didn't take long to collect several CPU coolers designed for the Intel Core i7 CPU & X58 platform. This Best CPU Cooler Performance LGA1366 - Q1 2009 article focuses on a wide selection of performance-cooling products for overclockers. It's a mistake to think that any LGA775 cooler can do just as well with the new LGA1366/Core i7 platform; primarily because the size and location of processor cores has changed.

When it comes down to it, those consumers shopping for aftermarket cooling products only want one thing out of them: the very best cooling performance their money can buy. It makes perfect sense, too. Since so many products flood the market, it all comes down to price and performance. Based on this principal, Benchmark Reviews searches out the latest CPU coolers and tests them under real-world overclocked conditions. Want to know which cooling products stand-out? This quarterly update to our Best CPU Cooler Performance series will separate the good from the bad... but we also find those products that are truly exceptional and deserving of your hardware projects.

Benchmark Reviews strives to offer the overclocker and hardware enthusiast community solid evidence reflecting the true performance of computer products through rigorous testing and evaluation. I personally understand that many of the readers who visit Benchmark Reviews have been involved with other community websites for several years, and therefore take our test results personally. So now that our test process has been reworked, we have collected the most complete source of benchmark results possible and gathered in a controlled environment. The purpose of this fifth article from our quarterly series is to document performance and declare the best CPU coolers available for the LGA1366 socket as of Q1 2009.

I would switch #1 and #2 just for aesthetics and weight.

So Optimus Prime is the best cooler...

Not really liking how it's intel only. I guess Optimus Prime is a fanboy.
Hmm...maybe the TRUE has met its match. I still don't totally trust the review, but now it makes me want to get the Megahalems and find out if it's true or not.

EDIT: Oh that explains it...the Megahalems is made by former thermalright designers...

First I heard of that, but it is now in my top three as well as the thermaltake V8 which is a beautiful cooler. boy I thought that one was all looks and no cool but it gave Thermalright a shake so there you go.
Quite happy with how the Xigmatek S1283 performed especially considering the price. The review itself was of a very high quality by the way.
Wonder if the TRUE still wins after lapping...

Seems to good to be true to FINALLY have someone make something better. And all it took was a cit down the middle lol.

I wonder how flat and even that base is on the TRUE they used

What happens when the best engineers from Thermalright decide that it's time to leave a stagnant company who refuses their ideas? They gather their intellect and begin Prolimatech.
I did not know that. Can't wait to see what other ideas they will be implementing.
Lapped HDT please

You can bookmark This page, nothing listed at the stores yet but you can check it out once in a while.

The Noctua didn't do nearly as well as I thought it would... but I about crapped my pants when I saw the differences between the Hammer, TRUE, and Megahalem. Good review, too bad they don't do lapped tests.

The Noctua is a 3 pipe cooler. Which they said works better with the Core line of chips. I wouldn't be surprised if a 4 pipe version was released within 6 months.

Otherwise a really good review. They explained their testing methods really well, and their reasons behind doing so.

The noctua NH-U12P has 4 pipes. It's the one on the left.

I just noticed that they lapped the CPU for the overclocked test... wonder why they couldn't have tested it both lapped and unlapped for people that won't do that (since I, for one, would much rather risk lapping the cooler than the CPU).
Lapping the CPU and not the TRUE can actually cause negative results. If you lap one, it's best to lap the other. Very strange that they didn't do the coolers too.
To answer a few questions about my review:

None of the coolers are lapped because they must be re-used in other tests. We did not lap the CPU on the stock and high-flow tests, but the overclocked test IS lapped. The contact surface of the TRUE I used was actually flat, unlike the 775 version; it also had a very nice (untextured) finish that was very smooth.

The Megahalems is going to be listed very soon, as Prolimatech has been finding distributors. They are not giving away too many details, at least not to me, so I can't say when they'll be in North America. On a related note, I recently introduced Intel Corporation to Xigmatek. I was absolutely shocked that they had never heard of them.

I will revisit this thread when time allow, and will keep an eye out on the questions.
