My brother is on leave from the Army for a few days, on his return he wants to take back a laptop that can play a few games so he has something to do in his spare time.

He went out to day with the specs for a few games such as Arma 2 and Fallout 3 and come home with a Acer Aspire 5553, the bloke who sold it to them said this laptop is more than powerful enough and will play these games with ease...

Loaded up Arma 2 and it struggles to play Very Low settings! What should he do, look for some upgrades or return it?

The seller was either trying to rip you off, or was just very ignorant.

That laptop has integrated graphics (rather, does not have dedicated graphics) and will not play any game at a playable framerate or detail setting. However, the CPU is nice and could be used to edit video.

But it is up to you to make sure that his claim about its power is justified. Next time, check out the specs yourself rather than trusting the seller when he says it will play games.

"My Brother" meaning i was not there so i had no say on what he bought, also that's the exact same laptop but has different specs..

Here they are straight from the side of the box.

Os - Windows 7 home 64
Processor - AMD Phenom II x4 Mobile Processor N930
Graphics - AIT Mobility Radeon HD 4250
RAM - 3GB DDR3

In short he needs to return it. The laptop NEEDS to have a dedicated graphics card in order to play anything at medium settings. Asus tends to make good gaming laptops. The processor is ok but really anything he should be getting should have at least an i5 processor.

Thx for clarifying.

The 4250 is an IGP and will not play any games. To upgrade this would probably be a pain, he should return the laptop.

Return it.

Your looking for a laptop with a better GPU obviously.

That site sucks, but your pressed for time. Since you seem to be on an entry level budget, look for a AMD: Mobility HD 5650 or 6650 or Nvidia GT 330, 335, 350, 420 or 540. No Intel or AMD 32xx/42xx integrated.

There should be a better buy elsewhere.

Yea I saw just your update. If you take a look at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-...ist.844.0.html and do a quick search for the 4250 you'll see it's number 221 on the list for laptop GPU's. And simply by ATI's own series, they are on the 6000 series which makes the 4250 two revisions old. I'd recommend trying to find a laptop with the Nvidia 460m as it's graphics card. It should be able to run most game at 45+ fps on average on medium settings. Most gaming laptops are going to be your 17 inch size though and cost more. I'm not too familiar with UK retailers and what you might be able to find. Still stands to me that he should return it.

He is goes to mess around with it today, see how things run the games and such and decide weather or not to return it...

He returns to the army tomorrow. The guy they spoke to said it would run them perfect, this laptop has more power than needed... Unbelievable anything to make a sale.

Wow! What some people will do for a sale (I should know, the ****er who tried to sell me my sig said it was for gaming *rolls eyes*. Anyways, Arma2 can't be played well unless you have a GTX 470 or better and even then it stutters and lags (bad coding). If Your Brother wanted to play it on a laptop he would need a GT 540 or better, I would recommend a GTX 460M or Radeon 6970. But if he's going back in a few days the only way he would be able to get a system with those specs would be for you to mail it to him.

If he can stand to wait and pay more, tell him to check out Kobalt Computers
