The only difference between the first and the second is the second allow for 96KHz recording... unless you're going to do any recording it doesn't matter. And unless you are using 7.1 speakers, why do you need 7.1 channel sound card?

Why wouldnt he want a 7.1 channel soundcard should be the question, 7.1 cards still support 5.1, 7.1 cards just have extra jacks for the 7.1 standard, buying 7.1 is the smart thing to do as it means he won't have to go out and blow another $90+ on a soundcard anytime soon.
