Why not get a cheaper case like a Antec 900 or Coolermaster 690

Then use the extra money to get a EP45-UD3P (Extra PCI-e slot) so your friend can add a another card later on.

Get a Western Digital Hardrive like this one. I prefer WD harddrives over others.

hitachi has a proven track record and is actually cheaper...he said he doesn't need much more room then 1TB so it's good....thats a good suggestion on the case/mobo though.

Definitely a solid build
. There are some changes that might be worth considering though.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128359
Gigabyte's P45 overclocking madness board! Its $10 cheaper than the UD3P with only one less PCI-E slot. Top quality for LGA 775.

Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184
4GB for $20 is an unbeatable price. Sure you won't overclock your ram as much but that's what ram dividers are for.

Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233029
Brilliant cooling for the price. Beats out the Zalman at a lower price.

Getting a Western Digital is worth the little extra cash. They make solid hard drives with good performance. It comes with a 5 year warranty as well. On the other hand, I've had two Hitachi's die on me right after warranty date.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119152
Honestly, a budget case is one with free shipping but the Cooler Master 590 offers such good airflow for a relatively low price. Best to pick this one up at a Fry's or MicroCenter.

Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236051
This Asus is a great budget choice for a higher 1950x1080 resolution. It also has better contrast, response time and has HDMI.

Optical: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136152
I had a Lite-On that continuously gave bad burns. Picked up this LG and I've been problem-free since.

Thermal compound: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835202006
Slightly better cooling interface.

OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488
I've never had a problem with Vista Home and its a lot cheaper.

Surge protector: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812120403
Free shipping

I would also recomend changing some components with minimal cost discrepancy:

MOBO: Gig P45 UD3P

RAM: Muskins or other D9's

I also recommend the above WD black 640 or 500 Gig. You are building a budget system, and WD black will give you the best performance. But its up to you to decide if you really need 1 tb or storage.

lastly, a 4870 512 or 1 gig

because it has the best performance/price ratio.

like others said:

save on the antec 1200 and go for a coolermaster 690 (imo better than antec 900)

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R or UD3P instead of the P43

skimp on that zalman crap and go for a xigmatek dark knight. its cheaper and performs way better. Zalmans can't handle quads or even duals as well as the xigmatek
