Alright so I'm more or less looking for something to run low-end games (More of a focus on WoW and SC2) while keeping it as cheap as I could. I was going to essentially throw away what I'm using now and just take the Q6600 out of it, but after realizing it would limit me to a board without DDR3 and would require upgrading in the near future anyways, I decided to change up the build and here are my results.

AMD Athlon II x4 640: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103871

Asus DVD writer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204

Cooler Master 690 II Basic: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119215

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073

ASUS M4A79XTD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131402

Sapphire Radeon 5770 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102873

Raidmax Hybrid 2 Modular PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817152035

Apevia Case Fans x 2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811998121

I'm mostly concerned with the power supply and mobo. At first I went with a case that had no real cable management slots, but after looking on this board and on Youtube and such, I figured it'd be worth it to invest in a case (seeing as it's probably the longest lasting part to any build) that has good cable management options and air flow, so I wanted a modular power supply. That was the cheapest one with a decent amount of watts, I'm just concerned with the name. :\\

Also worrying a bit about the mobo. Very basic mobo with not many options for the future (Overclocking doesn't seem awful on it but not ideal, no USB 3.0, no on board graphics should my card fail). I don't intend to OC, (at least not until I save up more money for better cooling) so I figure it's not a bad board.

Basically looking for suggestions. Looking to keep it as low as I can without sacrificing too much. I know this is a board "for performance" and not mediocre crap builds, but we all have our constraints. Shipped it's going to be 620 (kept it all on Newegg to keep shipping as low as I could) but I'm all ears for any other websites.

You're right about the PSU, invest in a better option; Raidmax is bleh. I don't have any cheaper modulars off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone will chime in. Otherwise, you have the option of tucking the extra PSU cables behind the motherboard tray.

Get different case fans. I have the same, and they're basically pieces of garbage. One of them started rattling intermittently after a few months.

EDIT: 666 posts!

What is your budget for this build? We can suggest some better options, but we need to know how much we have to play with.

I agree that you should go with a different motherboard. The 790x is a good chipset, but you can get an 8 series chipset for around the same price with better feature sets.

I would definately recommend a different PSU, the one you selected is far from anything I would recommend , but ill reserve my recommendations until I have an approximate build budget.

Edit: Just a case suggestion, $10 cheaper than what you selected, and has a side panel window. It appears to have decent cable managment, as well as hole grommets, which is a nice aesthetic touch. You may or may not like it.

Upgraded to that new PSU, but unfortunately it's out of stock. I'm a rather impatient guy so I'll probably end up getting the Raidmax if no others are suggested.

Took off the fans, I'll look around for others. They were just cheap and blue with a 5 egg rating, figured it'd be a good idea to grab them.

620 is open box
Trying to keep shipping as low as possible so I figure Newegg isn't a bad idea. Tigerdirect has tax and what not, and I'm new at this and don't know much for others. 3 day cheap shipping ftw.

My budget is trying to keep it as low as possible, but maybe about 700 shipped so maybe 680 in parts? Not trying to kill the bank so hard I can't go out this semester, haha.

And that case looks much better. I just heard so many good things about that case that I figured I couldn't go wrong.

And I would love to hear your suggestions. Maybe, if worth it, 750 or 800, depending on book cost.

Open to all suggestions, heh, first build.

Wow thanks a bunch. I added that for the tad bit more expensive build if money permits. I'll update sometime this week when I find out. Should suffice for anything I want to play at 1920 x 1080 for whatever I want with decent settings, yeah?

If your budget is higher, I can adjust a few things.

i was building a system not long ago and i had the same budget as you do , i decided to go with something that has a little bit of upgrade path , take a look :

Quote:

Case 69.99$ dunno why but i fell inlove with it , doesnt cost much and will fit all the things i will throw at it including my future CF setup .
Video Card 169.99$ as adviced went with GB 6850
Mobo+CPU 226.99$ the mobo meets my future CF needs PSU+memory 204.98$ this combo i will not touch as i always wanted a 80+ gold psu , it meets my future CF plans and with some luck i will get -20$ MIR

total : 681.95$ and -20$ MIR maybe .

i decided to keep my old HDD\\DVD+RW for now and in couple month planing to get 30-50 bucks CPU cooler for overclocks , another GB 6850 and a couple of HDDs for raid maybe ....

unlocked my phenom ofcourse and got 20 bucks MIR , i also had 700 bucks total for my build and now have 40 bucks left maybe ill order a better cooler cuz my phII B55 @ 3.5 Ghz on stock cooler running a little bit hot ....

anywayz killing all modern games with this build and i cant even imagine the FPS number when i pop in another 6850 when i get extra 170 bucks

concider all advices but in the end get what you feel is right for ya , btw the build above my post also not bad , specialy the case for that price , but PSU can stay with u for a long time so concider 80+ gold ..

For a huge go big budget, try at 850 shipped before rebates. Lol @ how little I have. And I'll definitely reconsider the PSU, my old one my friend bought me a while ago lasted for a loooong time. Need something to last about 3 more years till budget can afford something completely different.

Thanks again for all the help. Im interested to see some bigger budget builds I could -maybe- best afford or at the worst a 650.

Ha, I didn't know your budget was so high man. I just wanna second the Phenom II x4 955, as it is the one I upgraded to and I got it to 4GHz with no effort and stock cooling. Oh and to be honest, unless your going to be running quad crossfire, don't get a 790/890FX, I got one and I am kinda disappointed with it, because it just isn't necessary at all (I got a 5970 and never used more than one of my 4 PCI-e x16 slots). Also, 790FX/GX boards have H/W raid for the most part, 890FX/GX boards don't, so if you are planning a raid configuration, go old school.

Well, pending how books and such go, I might be able to afford a 850 budget shipped if I work at it. Trying my best to keep it under 700 though, but if I'm convinced it's legitimately worth it then I might consider something different.

The build I specced is pretty solid, you could go with a bit faster of a video card by sacrificing the CPU or vice versa. Or you could put the extra budget money towards a larger hard disk, or larger PSU. However that PSU is going to be more than adequate for any single GPU system.

Not too shabby, not a fan of the ram colors lol, but so long as it performs as its specified thats all that matters.

Looks like your back to the 790x board though. Its not a bad chipset, it just lacks some of the newer features.

With $600 you should be able to rock a Phenom II x4, non-generic memory, something better than the Corsair CX crap and a video card of the same or higher tier. Or at least, you could do that a few weeks/months ago, but those deals are sadly gone.
Not that there aren't any good deals, Superbiiz has that Samsung F3 1TB for $20 less after a promo code, you can get something much better than the 500CX for $59.99 (i.e. Antec NEO ECO 520C), etc.
