i use to be one of those guys that though, man those sound cards cant be that good. I was wrong. I bought a asus xonar ds on special for like 30 bucks I think. It made a huge difference from my evga x58 sli on-board. so yeah even a lower end card is worth it in my opinion. i heard the asus xonar DX is suppose to be pretty good for its price.

I have the DX and it's a very good card, the difference between it and integrated audio on my crappy Logitech X230 isn't enormous but it's still there, the difference with my HD595 is night and day though, before the headphones died anyway

If you want to spend as little as possible and still have really good sound the Xonar DG is the best option at $30.

I never said that getting a 'lower end' card would be bad?

If you want to go cheap:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020&cm_re=xonar-_-29-132-020-_-Product
$19.99 after MIR.

If you want to follow your budget guidelines you have a few more options

These two are the same, but have different interfaces, PCI-E x1 vs PCI

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132007 Out of stock on the Egg, but im sure you can get it elsewhere. Both $89.99, possibly cheaper elsewhere.

If you care about EAX for games, this is another option

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102034 $99.99
Over your budget on the Egg with shipping, but you can probrably get it cheaper elsewhere.

I went from an onboard sound solution, the Supreme FX 2, to the Asus DX. There is a difference there, a difference that will make a difference on higher quality audio files. The software that comes with the Asus is also pretty good, and unlike the creative card I have, is problem free.
