hey all. im being given 400$-500$ for a build for a friend.
now, i have two choices really. build him one or build me one better than mine and give him mine
he only needs it for web browsing and stuff
no need for HD's monitor or any peripherals.
mobo, cpu, and cheap GPU for him

or for me

mobo cpu and i'll use my ddr, and 7800gs agp

was thinkin of buyin some parts off here, upgrading mine (new mobo) giving him a 2.8 northy and my crap OC mobo. grab him a cheap agp card, two sticks of 2600 ddr 512's that i have layin around, using his current HD's etc.

or could i piece some things together to make me a better system than i have now, using some of my parts (hd's ram etc) and give him my cpu/mobo?

anyone?

Well I would say sell him your rig, and buy this:

CPU: 3700+ Sandy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103622
Mobo: DFI Ultra-D: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136152
RAM: Corsair XMS DDR 500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145453
Video Card: 7600 GT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130062
Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817812002

Total Price: $570

Sell your 7800 GS seperately if he doesn't need it, and you would have a pretty sweet rig. No use in reusing old technology if you can get a rig this sweet on the cheap like this.

well i already have 2x1gb mushkin extreme ddr500 in my current rig. i dont mind going amd. i've never owned one, but i've gotta keep it under 500$ CDN as i have no cash i can afford to sink into it of my own
he wont need the 7800gs. as it is overkill for him. i also cant order from the egg since im in canada

Well crap, look for the Ultra-D, the 7600, the Power Supply, and the 3700+ on tigerdirect.com It shouldn't cost that much more. And you'll save by not needing new RAM. You can still sell your 7800 GS for decent money.

would it be possible to go dual core? or not worth it for a lower end one?
also, grabbing some parts off OCN would save greatly too i would think

i'd really like to stick with ddr not ddr2, since im on a budget, and i've got some really good ram. im limited by my MOBO. so i cant even run it at spec timings at 500

i've heard good things about the opteron... what would be a good mobo to pair with that for decent overclocking, use of ddr500 and an AGP card?

seems like chozart is on the game now... this should be good
chozart... i'd like to keep it as minimal as possible. i dont need bleeding edge, just better than i have now.
i'd even be happy with getting a new Mobo for this rig.. but if we can pull something off in the pricerange, i'd be even more happy

The 7800GS isn't much faster than the 6800U and the 7600GT does beat out the 6800U
