Project X99 mATX - Core i7-5820k - EVGA X99 Micro - EVGA GTX 980 - Corsair 350D

Introduction:

Hello everyone!
thumb.gif

It's about that time again!
smile.gif
Wanted to do something a bit different this time around. Recently checked the Intel build logs, and couldn't find anyone working on a build based on the X99 chipset while also in a smaller form-factor. Looking to set up an mATX build with Intel's new X99 chipset paired with NVIDIA's new GM204 Maxwell chip along with an ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q monitor. Hope you subscribe and enjoy!

Purpose and goals of the build:

Looking to build a high performance gaming PC that has the ability to drive exceptionally high framerates on maximum settings on a 1440p / 144hz monitor. This will be done while keeping the machine almost silent and in a mATX case. In addition, my goal is to make it look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Color scheme for the build will include black, green, and white.

The canvas for this project arrived while I was at work this morning...

Expecting another shipment later today from Newegg which will include a majority of my main components, and another shipment with some other goodies from FrozenCPU within a day or two.

UPDATE: Feels like Christmas all over again

Got some parts in today

This is my first time ever seeing a 350D in person... and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! It's basically a mini-version of my 750D, which is great! It's the perfect size - not too small, and not too large. And build quality is superb for a $100 case. Really looking forward to building this rig. Some pics of the 350D below:

Removing the HDD cage, as I will not be using a hard drive in this build. Looks like removing it will also improve some airflow from the front 140mm intake fans.

Next step, removing the stock fans that came with the 350D, and upgrading them to SP120 LED and SP140 LED static pressure optimized fans. I purchased (4) SP140s and (1) SP120, which will occupy every available fan mount in the case, and each will bet connected to a Lamptron FC5-V3 fan controller in order to keep them quiet.

Last but not least, mounted my HX850i into the case as well.

That's it for tonight. Looks like I'll be receiving my shipment from FrozenCPU on Wednesday... and it also looks like I'll be picking up my ROG Swift PG278Q monitor that day as well.

Now, if only I could find a reference GTX 980...

I agree. In every build I've done, I've always had the fan side of the PSU facing up. I prefer it this way. Maybe that's just me

Joxx: Also, is there any reason why you would want the PSU fan spinning all the time? I personally think it's awesome that the doesn't spin up at all until it reaches 40% load, but I'm sure it would be possible to manually set it through Corsair Link.

Awesome build man!
It's almost exactly the same as the system I just finished building for my girlfriend.

Inten I7-5820k
EVGA X99 Micro
EVGA GTX 970
4x4GB DDR4 RipJawz
Corsair SP120 and SP140 fans (purple)
Samsung 250GB 840 EVO
Samsung 120GB 840 EVO
WD 2TB Black
Corsair AX 760
Corsair 350D

You will not be disappointed. This thing is a beast! for a really good price.

Yes, I simply like to see it spinning. It's my fan, I paid for it.
Same with the new Nvidias (Asus Strix and so on), as far as I know there's no way to have the fans spin all the time. If I look through a case window and I see the fan stopped it's like something is wrong. Fans are supposed to spin, that's what they do, even if it is 100rpm.

Welcome to OCN

Crazy how similar your build is to mine! You even got the SP120 and SP140 LED fans like I did. I just want a small, quiet, yet powerful system that doesn't take up a huge amount of space, which is why I went with the parts that I've chosen. And, I want to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

I'll check Corsair link to see if there is a setting to manually set the fan speed to run 24/7. If I remember correctly, I believe Corsair Link on my AX1200i had that capability, however, I never used it and let the fan run at auto. I'll check again once this build is fully set up and let you know.
