Building Dedicated Folding Rig

627 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Mikecdm
Thought I'd contribute to the cause and build a folding rig. I have the mobo and CPU since I upgraded them on my main computer, so I just need some advice as to what to get and what my potential ppd would be. I hope to get this built before the november foldathon.

CURRENT:
Intel DP45SG board
Q8200
250GB HD from my current computer
X850XT PE (even worth using for the GPU client??)
Ultra X2 550W PSU (if I get my replacement soon)

NEEDED:
Memory, DDR3

Need something cheap right??

Cooler, CPU: Freezer 7. Don't need anything fancy, the intel stock cooler looks like it's going to break the board.

Prolly use XP x86 and the GPU and SMP (if I can figure out how to run it) clients.

What kinda PPD can I expect from this? I also have no clue on how to do the SMP client so I can run it on all 4 cores. I wanna get into folding and help out OCN!

You can't run the GPU2 client on anything older than ATI HD2k series or Nvidia 8 series. Sorry

As for SMP, there are guides here for how to run Linux SMP in VMware

PPD should be ~3500 give or take a bit

the quad will give you decent PPD in VMware......forget about that ATI card though......try to hunt down an 8800GS or a 9600GSO.....look for 192bit 384MB 96SP versions......they sell very cheap....use little power.....game decently....and put out about 3500 to 4500 PPD......that should help you climb the ranks

There is more bad news.
Unfortunately, the Q8200 is does not have the virtual extensions, so you'll have to run a 64-bit OS to run VMware.
If you're running Windows 32 bit you'll be relegated to the windows smp client which is a meager performer. You can expect about 1400ppd on that processor with the win smp client.
There is hope on the horizon with SMP2 but that's still a ways off.

If it is to be a dedicated folding machine I would load it up with Ubuntu 64 bit and start learning how to fold under native linux. You'll at least double the Windows smp client performance. There are many tutorials around to help you get started.

You beat me to it, with what the OP currently has, i was going to suggest using a native linux. I use linux mint on one of my machines and it's not difficult at all to set up. I also run the rig without ever having to touch it, something that I find difficult with VMware.
