I've been contemplating building one for quite a while, and I have a basic design...

6 inches tall
2 inch diameter
2 inch cap

I was also thinking about build an air heatsink into the cap... If that makes any sense....

nope dosent make any sense. Grab a 1.75 inch diamater copper disc as tall as you would like drill a bunch of threaded holes into it and braze it onto the cap bevore you put the pipe on. It will work fine empty at stock vcore and such to test things assuming you get a good mount. But just like anything else copper those solid disc pieces are pricey. If you dont know already www.mcmastercarr.com is a great source for raw materials copper and such. The solid copper is a good choice because with threaded holes you get mass and surface area and will be able to handle a load for longer. With an air cooler with fins might dissipate heat better not sure though but will heat up quicker.
