Building my first PC, looking for recommendations/advice

Novice overclocker here, I'm not really looking for something super good to OC just something I can tweak a bit if need be, I've been poking around this site on and off for a while and now I'm looking for any comments or recommendations for a computer I plan on building, so far I have:

Monitor
Asus 23.6" 1920x1080(1080p) HDMI $209.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16824236052

Video Card
EVGA GTX 260 core 216 896mb GDDR3 $215.49: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814130434

CPU
Intel Core i7 bloomfield 2.66ghz LGA 1366 $304.99:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115202

Motherboard:
MSI X58 Pro-E LGA 1366 $199.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813130226

Memory
OCZ Gold 3x2GB DDR3 1600 $149.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820227365

Case
Cooler Master RC-690 Black ATX mid Tower $79.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811119137

HDDs
2x WD 1TB 32mb cache $169.98($84.99 ea): http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16822136283

Keyboard
GIGABYTE GK-K6800 $16.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16823334002

I already have a mouse/headset/speakers and I'm getting a 650W PSU from a friend.

I'm aiming for a high(ish)-end gaming PC on a budget. Any comments on this build (problems or recommendations) or links to good guides for building you're own PC would be greatly appreciated.

Links are dead; you've hyperlinked them with an ellipsis.

The motherboard's brown; I don't like brown.

Does the PSU you are getting have 2x 6-pin PCI-E Power connectors?

Why not get a GTX275 instead of the GTX260?

Please can you specify how much you are willing to spend.

And finally, what games do you play and at which resolution?

Sorry about that, should be fixed now

I'm not too picky about color, plus the black/blue sockets don't look too bad

I'm not sure, I'll check when I talk to my friend next (probably monday) but I would assume so, I think it was a fairly recent PSU.

Mostly Price, and it didn't seem that much better.

Please can you specify how much you are willing to spend.
I'd say around $1000-$1500 (CAD), preferably lower

And finally, what games do you play and at which resolution?
Well right now TF2, and once I get the new computer, Global Agenda (I had to stop playing it because my computer couldn't handle it) also been playing some Mass Effect recently, and that barely runs. as for resolution, as high as I can while maintaining a decent FPS (pref 100+) seeing as the native res on the monitor is 1920x1080 that's what I'd like to be using.

Thanks for the quick reply

Some great selections...

May I ask, what Power supply are you getting from this friend? Power supplies may be the most important part and skimping on them is a big no-no

personally i'd go with the cm 690 case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-137-_-Product

cheaper and i know from personal experience its a very awesome case, everything else seems pretty good to me. Dont' expect for all games to run at 100+ fps with that card and at 1920x1080 but you'll get good fps nonetheless with just about all games

I'm not entirely sure on the power supply, but like I said I'm gonna be talking to my friend Monday. I got the impression it was a decent one though, and free is a hard price to beat.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811129042 Is the the case you're referring to?
I don't really know anything about cases beside you need enough room and want good airflow. What about the Antec 300 (besides the price) makes it a better case?

As for the HDDs I probably wouldn't need that much space, but It'd be nice to have just in case, especially if I want to store some HD movies or something.

Thanks for the input. Like I mentioned a minute ago I don't really know much about cases, what make that one better? (although looking at it, I like its design a bit more I think)

i've had bad experiences with MSI boards. i'd change it out for something else.

the evga x58 micro is a good board in that price range, and i saw an open box P6T deluxe v1 (almost the same as the v2 but apparently without SAS controllers)

The evga x58 micro is a bit more expensive, and doesn't have as many PCI/PCI-e slots ( I don't know if this is a huge issue, I don't have an in depth knowledge of motherboards either).

Also I could not find the open box P6T deluxe, and otherwise the ASUS P6T series seems a bit out of my price range.

Alright after looking into the case a bit more I think I'm gonna switch to the CM 690, its a tad cheaper and I like the look/layout of it better.
is it just me or are the i7 920 abd evga GTX260 core 126 like 50$+ more expensive X_x... ?

50$+ more expensive then what?

U don't need more PCI-Express/PCI slots unless u intend to use them. I wouldn't go for MSI myself, but would go for eVGA as they make really quality stuff. And u could also look at the socket 1156 i5 as it also performs (OCed) pretty much on par with a 920.

The HAF 932 looks nice, however I'm already just about at the limit of my budget so unless its a significant improvement I'd rather not spend any extra money.

Right now the only part that seems to be up in the air is the mobo, some people have had issues with MSI, so I'll do some more looking around.

I'd say that's a great build for a first time. You sure you haven't done this before? This seems well researched. Usually I'm able to tear these things apart and suggest better parts, but it seems pretty solid.

As far as a case goes, I just bought a HAF 922 off newegg for $60 after MIR. Or, if you want, an Antec 900 for $60 after MIR.

The monitor you picked out is great. The only thing I don't like about it is the interface. It took a little while to get used to the button and menu placement.

Perhaps a different keyboard would be nice. I ran across this article on tomshardware earlier today that you might find interesting.

EDIT: If you're looking for a gaming keyboard, here's a holiday newegg deal. Perhaps an ergonomic solution to typing. I see nothing wrong with the Gigabyte if it's just for basic tasks. I'm currently using my Compaq OEM that came with my computer package a while back.

People have issues with just about any X58 motherboard. Some just have more problems than others. Even my first build had some problems, so I have to research to figure out what went wrong. The HAF 932 would be an improvement over your other choice, but wouldn't warrant the extra money unless it was discounted to a low price.
This may be out of the question, but I would recommend waiting a month or so until you spend a bunch of money on a new computer. USB 3.0 has been released, SATA 600 standard is just around the bend, and when Intel releases it's new line of hexacore processors (i9) in the first quarter of 2010, I think the i7s should come down in price. The problem with this though, is that there's ALWAYS going to be something bigger and better to wait for. USB 2.0 has been around a while, so I'm guessing 3.0 should last just as long. The same goes for SATA.

If anything, I would wait until USB 3.0 and SATA 600 are a little bigger, and you can find a motherboard capable of both. Just my
.

If waiting isn't an option, or you're SO excited to get started (as I always am), then you already know what I think about what you've picked out.

I couldn't wait because I've upgraded from a 6 year old P4 rig. Might as well wait for the eventual release of USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps (SATA III). SATA III makes me wonder how fast SSDs will really be?
u need a 1gb video card for that 23´ monitor
