Calling all gamers

Thanks again for the replies! They've been very useful indeed! I'll try 'n go through and rep you all, haha.

I actually wrote my essay today so no need to reply any more, unless you want to discuss the whole girls and games thing.

I'm writing an essay for University and I was wondering if you'd take some of your time to help me out. If you could, answer these questions;

Quote:
confidential survey;

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QNSNFVK

or if you'd prefer to answer the questions here;

- What is your gender?
- What is your age?
- What games do you play?
- Why do you enjoying playing them?
- Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry?
- If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it'd be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc.

You don't have to write a load, just a sentence or two would do. I know there's a few female members on here, so I'd really appreciate their input. If you know of any regulars, could you point them in this direction please?

Thanks a lot

You're just trying to pick up women on the interwebs, aren't you?
lol j/k

Anway..

Male, 28

I enjoy FPS games mostly

I honestly can't say for certain why I really like playing them (besides the obvious answer; that they're fun). I guess I like games that have a great story; being immersed in a game to the point you feel like a part of the story is quite entertaining and engaging.

Why do I think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry? That a big question. Maybe because guys like "instant gratification" more? I think saying anything here could get me into trouble.... lol

If a team consisting entirely of women made a game, I think it may be well thought out and possibly rely more on a compelling story rather than raw action. But that's just a very simple (and wild) guess.

this, I wouldn't mind taking your survey, but privacy is key.

I'll try and answer in minor detail to my reasoning.

What is your gender?
Male
What is your age?
21
What games do you play?
Genre-wise primarily FPS
Why do you enjoying playing them?
Great fun and a way to unwind
Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry?
When Video games first appeared, it was considered a boy-ish thing. Throughout the years, this thought towards gaming has stuck.
Nowdays, if a female gamer announces they are female while gaming, they usually get LOADS of abuse (immature sexual jokes usually) - meaning there are probably loads more female gamers than what most people think.
If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it'd be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc.
It depends on the women who make it. Just because it's an all woman team, doesn't mean it's going to be all pink and have loads of unicorns in it (like the stereotype of "female gamers" play).
Having said this, they will most likely be slightly more puzzle-based than just "shoot the crap out of this person". So perhaps a stealth-like Call of Duty (or more strategy needed to "clear" a room full of enemies) or something. Again, it depends on the group of women who develop the game.

I think that's a very valid point. I think some females are hesitant to make their sex known due to abuse that may likely come of it in a "gaming" environment.

I'm not trying to imply that all (or even most) males are disrespectful in online gaming, but people tend to say things they may not in real life due to the anonymous nature and decreased chance or ability of retribution that the "internet wall" presents.

- What is your gender? Male
- What is your age? 18
- What games do you play? Shooting games
- Why do you enjoying playing them? They're fun
- Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry? It's a proven fact that men have better hand/eye coordination than women, so it's harder for females to learn how to play a video game properly. Many women like video games and want to learn, but it's either very difficult or they just stick to games like Super Mario and Pacman. I'm sure there are many other factors that come into play, but that's just one of them.
- If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it'd be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc. Most of the characters would probably be women. The game would also be made easier to play, I believe.

- What is your gender?
Male
- What is your age?
19
- What games do you play?
RPG's, and FPS's
- Why do you enjoying playing them?
RPG's make me immersed in the game, they make me feel a deep sense of significance and feel like i have control. I like FPS's because they are a great stress reliever, and they help with my more competitive side.
- Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry?
Im going to say that statistically, more men (much more) play video games because of our immense competitive nature and are always into things that the average human just can't do (ie., kill people, be an elf, or fly a space ship). Women tend to care more about their physical appearance and aren't extremely into adventurous activities or sports.
- If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it'd be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc.
I think the team wouldn't be very competitive at all, i feel that the environment would be very friendly, and most likely be for RPG's, and MMO's. I think that they would use their clan time having fun and not taking the game to serious.

- Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry? sexism, males generally game more than woman with the exception of mmos and the sims
- If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it’d be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc. would never happen, if it did then it would probably be an MMO and probably take off with a lot of initial buyers.

  • Why do you think there are so many more men than women in the gaming industry? Because other stuff appeals to women then to men, some are more interested in games, some are more interested in going shopping with friends (I mean that with all the respect)
  • If a team consisting of entirely women made a game, what do you think it'd be like, genre, characters and popularity, etc. To be honest, no idea

- competitive, video games are fun always have been for me.
- the competitive market has always appealed to men over women
- there would be no market aimed specifically at one gender..that's sexist and that's a good way of losing money.
I've played in clans with quite a few female gamers. They tend to keep quiet on voip and don't reveal their gender. However I've played with more female games that are open then not. They were more open about it and stood their ground about it. The more open ones also tend to for a lack of better words kick ass. I'am not sure if they are really confident and brave about it or if they just happen to be good at games and let that drive their confidence.

Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the responses!

As suggested, I have also created a survey to fill in

Some of the posts in this thread alone is proving my point about the abuse female gamers recieve (I realise some of you are joking, but still).

When it comes to gaming, people intend to stick to stereotypes - which can be considered sexist.

I know of a few female gamers (including some causins), and they are as good as the lads they play alongside.
Gender doesn't effect your ability to "kick ass" (as some of you put it), it's your mentality and upbringing.

Would you mind sending them a link to the survey please?

The ones who I keep in contact with, sure, but most of them I rarely see nowdays (most are from my school days).

I'll email them now before I forget... Don't know if any of them will even bother filling the survey in, but it's worth a try.
