Can I connect comptuer to computer via cat5?

Hi. My router recently died and I have a computer I need to get files off. It is not connected to a monitor, mouse, nor keyboard as it is a web server with cli only that I would access through SSH.

My main computer has 2 ethernet ports and I was wondering if I could connect my web server to my main computer via ethernet cable and retrieve the needed files. Is that possible?

Thanks.

Nevermind, sorry. I posted this before I googled.

Yeah aslong as it's a crossover cable or the ports can auto-negotiate.

Just assign the network adapters static IP's and attempt to ping them to check if it's working.
Hm, I'm on a modem, not a router. The web server showed up as an unidentified network. I gave it static IP and tried to SSH and it refused connection.
By assign you know I mean from within windows right >.>

Assign both of the computers IP's such as 192.168.1.1 and the other 192.168.1.2, then reset if you like, just test the connection by pinging, if you can't ping then it's probably the NIC's not being able to use a patch cable.
Can't you just pull the HDD out and temporarily install it into the computer you need the files on?

I know what you meant, I was doing it within Windows. What did you think I was doing? I can ping it and receive all of the packets but I can't ssh into it.

Try something other than SSH then, FTP, HTTP, shared folders if both windows.

Edit: Oh yeah, no monitor or control, nevermind.

Edit: Edit: How'd you assign the server the IP then?
Right clicked the network in Windows and assigned IP. It's linux btw.
'The network'? You need to change the servers NIC IP, I don't see how you can do that without having physical access.
