Ive just cleaned off my air cooler and removed the heat pads and was wondering if CPU thermal paste would do a better job?

With a small amount applied of course

I had to make the same decision a while back when I decided to aplly TIM to the stock cooler of my eVGA 8800GT. Of course I put it on the chip, but I debated putting it on the RAM.

What I did was use the little thermal pads as a buffer between the RAM chip and the TIM. So it was RAM chip then thermal pad then TIM then heatsink. It seemed to wprk out just fine as I used the card for several months after that with a nice 3-4C temperature drop.

I've done it and its worked fine. Its NOT recommended to use anything that is electrically conductive. Spread it evenly with your finger in a plastic bag.
