Can't decide between E5200 or Athlon II 240, owners please post underclocking results

I am going to get an updgrade for my linux machine. It uses a opteron 165 in it, which is way to hot. I am thinking about either an E5200 or an athlon II dual core for a replacement. The perform about the same, I want to underclock them in my system either at stock speeds or down to about 2.0ghz. Ideally I want the one with the lowest power consumption.

If any owners of an E5200 or an Athlon II dual core could post their voltages and speeds underclocking their processor I would really appreciate it, and would help me make a better decision. I am interested in particular with results of:

E5200 (or similar processor) at 2.5ghz and 2.0ghz

Athlon II 240 (or similar) at 2.0, 2.5, and stock speeds.

well why not get what i have if you want a cheap cpu that uses low voltage? my e3200 uses like around 1.15v for 2.4Ghz stock, i would imagine that for 2.0Ghz it could use close to 1.0v. This chip also has VT unlike the e5200, so if you wanna use perhaps vmware or xp in windows 7 then that comes in handy

Thanks for that information. I didn't know that intel offered VT support for anything but thier core2duo? I will be considering this processor as well thank you.

you could also try getting one of the low power 'e' CPU's...

my bet would be AMD though

It has been my experience that the lower clocked processors can be emulated and better with a higher clocked version underclocked. To get down to 45 watts with an Athlon II 250 I would just have to reduce voltage and/or clock speed by 30%. Something that can probably nearly be done at 3.0ghz.

I've seen someone take a tri-core phenomII down to 90mhz and something like .5v so I would say the AMD chip would win out.

My E5200 can reach 3.75GHz stable with 1.35v Vcore, tempt never breaks 55 degree Celsius. I'm setting at 4.0GHz with 1.425v because I plan to change it soon.

I definitely recommend you the E5200.
I would go with the Athlon. Lower voltages and you wouldn't be using a "dead" socket, so you could upgrade later if you used an am3 board. Just my two cents.
