Capacitor or Fan Buzzing?!

748 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Dark Volker
I started folding (runs gpu at 100%) yesterday and ever sense then for a second or two ill hear a slight buzzing sound then it dies down, then it happens again. My fan runs at 50% but gpu is in the low 60C range. The noise is so slight that if you are a few feet away you wont hear it, its almost whisper quiet. Is it my fan kicking up for a second and dying down to maintain low temps since its right at that point, or is it the capacitors? I went on to youtube to see what a capacitor squealing sounds like and mine sounds NOTHING like that, mine is MUCH quieter and much less high pitched and it only goes on for 1-2 second bursts. I HOPE its the fan, is it?

This is what squealing should sound like

Mine is NOT like this.

edit: i did read the article, but it does not explain how to know if its your fan just buzzing or a cap. Mine is not very load and sounds nothing like the video I posted. (or other vids i watched)

Unplug your fan for a second then.
Try to catch this 'buzzing' sound with the side of your case open and stay close enough to it to find out around where it is coming from.

To find out if it is the GPU fan...open a monitoring program such as GPU-Z or the EVGA Precision program and watch for an increase in fan speed when you hear the noise.

Is the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro CPU HSF that you have the PWM version(4-pin MB connector)? If so, the fan speed of that CPU HSF will increase with temperature also. Monitor that fan speed while you can hear the noise also.

thanks! lll try this! (my hsf is the 4pin version)
edit: im pretty sure its coming from the gpu somewhere...
Im only running [email protected] on the gpu so my cpu usage is @ 0% atm. I just exited [email protected] and it stopped...its coming from the part of my gpu where the fan is, not sure if that means anything. But ill monitor the fan speeds and see.
If its the caps should I rma?

I forgot to mention it, but while folding...your GPU and CPU is under load. You might have to unplug one of the fans like blupupher said to distinguish between the two.
