Case Compatible with dual 771

2189 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  pippolo
I just purchased a dual 771 Intel motherboard for a file server/untangle gateway I am building, but I am confused as to what sort of a case I need since I am pretty sure that the heatsinks bolt to the motherboard tray. Is there a certain case I need for this board or are there brackets I can mount the heatsinks to instead?

The board is a Intel s5000PAL.

Thanks!

That board is going to require a chassis that supports EATX motherboards.

Here's a list of Intel-tested rackmount chassis. They're all EATX chassis, as far as I can tell. (http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-023345.htm).

Any boxed processor should come with the necessary HSF components for mounting on any of the motherboards that are compatible.
Will any EATX compatible case work? And if that is so, will any full tower gaming case supporting EATX work?
yes
Ok, thanks guys!

Yes, you should be good to go with any EATX case, but I would caution you to really consider the thermodynamics / airflow of the case. As long as you have sufficient airflow through the case, you should be fine. I'm not sure you should really be aiming to get a "quiet" server =P, though getting a case that supports 120mm fans is, probably, the better way to go. Too bad the Antec Nine/Twelve-hundred cases don't support EATX... lol.

The Xeon 5400-series pump out a lot of heat, though with sufficient cooling you can get them down to about 34C - 38C on idle..

Make sure you get a case that will put your HDD/optical drives far enough away from the CPUs to get enough airflow to the HSFs and still allow your to plug the cables into them too...

This.

The best way to design a server's airflow is to actually have as many fans as possible blowing from front to back, and use passive heatsinks on the cards. This way there's no longer a single point of failure with the cooling (being the fan that you put on an HSF).

Probably, no.

The overall dimension of the EATX boards is about the same of the SSI EEB format, but I think that the CPU mounting holes are different.
I have a Tyan Tempest i5400XT MB (dual 771 SSI EEB format) and I mounted it on a Chieftec Tower case SSI EEB compliant. I own also other 2 Chieftec Full tower cases in EATX format, but them aren't compatible with the MB.
The CPU heatsink are mounted directly on the MB tray and it's necessary that the tray have the mounting hole at the correct position.

The Intel s5000PAL is declared as "SSI TEB 2.1", a form factor dedicated to 1U and 2U servers.
Not all the case builders declare all the supported formats. It's possible that some case declared only as EATX it's also SSI TEB compliant, but it isn't guaranteed.

I suggest you to check very well the case specs before to buy it.
