Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_0-Visible-Contrast.jpg

Hey, back at it again. Originally I was going to build a wooden computer case to house my new desktop build, including space a pair of 240mm radiators for a CPU, GPU, and motherboard loop. But then I ended up deciding on the Asus Gryphon motherboard instead of the Maximus VI Gene. This led me to drop the motherboard from the loop. Since I don't game, or need a graphics card that has a full cover block, I decided to keep my 4GB 640GT for now, and just go with a CPU loop for my first custom water-cooling loop.

The name:
This mod is named Visible Contrast due to the fact that it will be a black and white build, stemming off of the color scheme of the NZXT H230 Silent Chassis that I will be modding, after reviewing it at The Mod Zoo. There will also be a surprise for the side panel window, which will shed light on the name as well.

The Mods:
The mods will include making space for mounting a 240mm radiator in the front, and a window (of sorts) in the side panel, and a few other things here or there. I am hoping to keep this project pretty straight forward, and relatively quick.

The Stuff:
Here's a list of some of the stuff that I'll be using in this mod

For this first update, I'll be making room for the 240mm Rad up front.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00013-W640.jpg

I'm starting with the stock NZXT H230 Chassis.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00249-W640.jpg

The upper 3.5" drive cage is removable by thumb screws. The bottom cage is removable too…

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00250-W640.jpg

When I say "removable", there is a little more work required...

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00251-W640.jpg

This is much better. Next up is the same treatment for the 5.25" bay.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00252-W640.jpg

Both drive cages are now out, and there is plenty of space in the front.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00253-W640.jpg

There were a few more rivets to drill out than I thought there would be.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00254-W640.jpg

Now it's time to make a little headroom for the radiator.
I've marked out the bottom of the 5.25" bay for the cut out.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00255-W640.jpg

Not too bad for just a dremel, I think.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00256-W640.jpg

Radiator fitted to show the plan.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00257-W640.jpg

You can see why this was required. Definitely not enough room otherwise.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00258-W640.jpg

I decided I wanted to remove a little more; there just wasn't enough clearance for me.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00259-W640.jpg

That'll do.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00265-W640.jpg

This was the next issue that needed tackling.
I've already drilled out the factory 6-32 threaded inserts with an 11/64" drill bit.
The lower set of fan screw holes don't line up quite right.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00267-W640.jpg

Out with the small needle file to make some ovals.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00269-W640.jpg

That is good enough for me.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00268-W640.jpg

Now I'll be able to fit both fans to the radiator

That's all the update for now, thanks for checking it out.

Subbed! This case looks a lot like the Source internally. I wish they would have just moved the 5.25 bays up ~2in for full 240 rad support, instead of having to cut into it.

Thanks. The internal of the case isn't bad, but I agree. Even if they would have gone down to 2x5.25" bays instead of 3 (similar to the Fractal Design offerings in similar size and layout), it would have worked with out having to chop up the drive bay. Not that I'm complaining too much, always looking for an excuse to bust out the dremel lol

Back with another update to this project. Not a big one at this point, but a few more additions.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00286-W640.jpg

Took a little field trip with the case, and bought some parts from MNPCTech.
I bought some U-channel to install over the cut edges of the 5.25" bay.
I figured the tubing would benefit from not having sharp edges around.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00285-W640.jpg

Nice mitered corners

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00287-W640.jpg

I then used black pop rivets to reinstall the 5.25" bay.

08_casemod_computer_feet_mnpctech.black1wb.jpg
Next up are a set of MNPCTech black anodized "grooved" billet aluminum case feet.
http://www.mnpctech.com/CaseFeetMachined.html

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00300-W640.jpg

These will help get the case off the floor a little bit more, and go well with the black and white theme.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00295-W640.jpg

After installation, I ran across a small problem. This isn't going to work for the rear feet, as they'll hit the PSU.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00297-W640.jpg

To lower the clearance on the inside of the case, I picked up some plastic barrel bolts.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00298-W640.jpg

That should do the trick.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00299-W640.jpg

Now there is just enough clearance for the PSU to sit on the rubber pads.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00274-W640.jpg

I also put a few coats of white paint on my thermal armor.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00281-W640.jpg

I want it to be primarily white on the inside. It should make it brighter on the inside, once I install some LEDs.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00302-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00304-W640.jpg

I'm planning on leaving the PCI covers black. I like the contrast it adds to the mix, and I think it helps make the motherboard components not stand out as much, for not being painted white.

That's all for today,

Thanks for all the comments guys :)

In this update, I'll be installing the watercooling gear. I'm going to spare you the 90 shots of fittings, blocks, radiators, etc, and just dive in. This is what's going to be going in it:
XSPC AX240 Radiator (White)
XSPC Raystorm CPU Block
EK 140 Res top with a D5 Vario pump.
Monsoon Fittings and angles with white accents
PrimoChill Advanced LRT tubing, in white

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00305-W640.jpg

The EK res top kit includes a nice bracket for mounting the assembly to a vertical surface.
I do not have a vertical surface, so I started with this sheet aluminum to make a bracket to mount it on the floor.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00306-W640.jpg

I used my workmate, a block of wood, and some clamps to bend this up.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00308-W640.jpg

I made a few cuts with tinsnips and drilled some mounting holes to screw into the pump top.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00310-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00311-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00312-W640.jpg

A few test fittings to make sure it'll work.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00318-W640.jpg

I painted it with the same white paint that I used on the TUF armor.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00320-W640.jpg

I lined it with some of the foam that I salvaged from the side panel.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00323-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00324-W640.jpg

That should work, nice little contrast continuing on the black and white.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00337-W640.jpg

I installed the pump on its new bracket at this point. I had already roughed in the plumbing earlier.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00329-W640.jpg

The next thing I did was drill out and install for a drain port on the bottom of the front corner.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00338-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00334-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00335-W640.jpg

At this point I painted the radiator housing, so it would match the case better. The stock XSPC white was not as bright as everything else.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00336-W640.jpg

I also painted the top retainer plate from the Raystorm block white as well.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00340-W640.jpg

I got everything installed, routed, and ready to leak test.

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00343-W640.jpg

With bibs ready, time to run the loop for a while…

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00350-W640.jpg

Now time for the motherboard install :)

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00352-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00355-W640.jpg

Mosquito_NZXT_H230_PrimoChill_LRT_Liquid_DSC00353-W640.jpg

That'll do :)

At first I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to like the white with black accents, but after seeing it, I must say that I quite like it. It's a lot of white, but just enough black to break it up. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for checking this one out, next up will be the window install process, which I'm looking forward to :)

WOW.

That pump mount was a great idea, especially with the fill port outlet. +Rep

The white tubing, black fittings, and white Thermal Armor looks reaaalllyy nice. This is definitely one of my favorite build logs. Keep it up man!

Thanks, I really appreciate the kind words

I was very happy with the pump bracket... I was planning on making 2-3 before I made one that looked ok, but I got lucky on the first one

Thanks Striker. I won't disagree with you either. I was sort of on the fence about it until I got it painted. If I were to make another one, I may change a thing or two on it, but I'm happy with this one
