If I am not mistaken the CCFL tubes are AC and the PSU is DC so you will need to convert AC to DC.. so you cannot hard wire it.

damn thats all i need to know cause i that this little inverter since you have to have it time to repaint it
I had this question earlier as well. He is right, you cannot hardwire the CCFLs to 12v, you need to go through the converter box. It's a pain, but I made it look pretty

just need to get some wire and solder them a little longer so i can move the **** box out the way thanks for the help +rep
Yes the inverter is necessary, but here's another word of caution; if you want to change the length of the wiring between the CCFL tubes and the inverter, it can not be extended by much (5-10 cm max) as when the wiring is too long the light will not illuminate correctly (often resulting in only half the tube being lit)

why would wire length matter?
shouldn't there be enough voltage in those wires to carry it many many feet easily?

It doesn't really make much difference how long the 12V supply to the inverter is; it's the high voltage AC line from the inverter to the CCFL tube that's critical, I've tried extending the wiring for several CCFLs tubes with similar results.

On my sig build i extended a ccfl like 2.5x original length and it worked fine.

Might also depend on the color; I did once extend the wires on an old blue CCFL without issue; but these UV CCFLs are picky
