Hey, I am buying a new processor to hold me over until Conroe (sold my 550 last night). What should I go with, 920 or 651? They are practically the same price. I will be heavily overclocking on water with my new P5WD2-E Premium.

Given your conditions, I would personally go with the 920 and pump up the volume.

The thing is, I don't think dual core will present a huge advantage over single core until Vista, at which time I will have Conroe.
the cedar mill will prolly oc higher, so go with that
It would take a lot of Vc for the 920 to reach 4.6ghz. 328x14

It would take less Vc for the 651 to reach 4.6ghz. 275x17

On water. Tough choice but I'd rather go for single core with higher clocks that can easily be achive than one that can risk damage to the CPU by running it with such high Vc. There's a big chance that the 651 could do that 275fsb on less than 1.5Vc. So 651 IMO.
presslers have been getting some decent OC's. I would go pressler.
Id wait for a Conroe, those things are gonna be Monsters. =)
on H2O
275 FSB = presler (Better Multitasking (Prob future games)))
300+ FSB = Cedar Mill (Better games) + water = 300 X 17 = 5100 . ive dont think AMD has a 5100 single core FX57 would be 4200-4300 overclock maybe 4500-4800
most MB 275 in not a problem, remember that ASUS board is not a DFI but 300 FSB should work with the proper,PSU etc.

are you planning a MB Change? if not are you sure you have compatablity ?
I cant believe you'd ever regret the CedarMill

They're 65nm so you'd never need more than 1.4v even to do 5GHz+, 1.5v would be like 1.8v or something on a 90nm (not really but Im making a point)

I am getting the ASUS P5WD2-E Premium, the cream of the crop as far a motherboards go. So you guys think the Cedar Mill is a good idea?
Hers a thought the 920 stock will out perform any of the 6xx or 5xx series CPUS in any event bench or game, Im sorry but numbers dont lie often

a 920 in head to head with a 651 would bring better scores through everything both at stcok speeds, and when it comes to overclocking the 920 will leave the ceder in the dust with out breaking a drop of condinsation(sp)
hmm he may be right
,i have no first hand with cedarmill but that will prob work pretty darn good 4.6 without a doubt maybe 5+ but who can be sure till sombody trys it, maybe wait a few days for more cedarmill benchies

Anandtech reports that the Cedar Mill and Presler OC virtually the same....
then go with presler since its dual cored 376 million transistor goodness @ same clock speed . a good 920-930 might be the best bang/buck ever @ even 4.5

Nah, I not willing to for out that much... I play on OCing this baby to about 4.5-4.8Ghz, I decided on the 920! Thanks for the imput.

i was hoping for 4.25 but 4.6-4.7 was so easy i figure 4.57 is no problem for 24/7 since i have no heat issues .1.1Ghz for dual core is not 2 bad OC i guess , but i bet youll be like 1.5Ghz which i dont think ive seen short of phase ,not even close. who know the hell knows what 65nm part are cabible of. there are so few who have, microscopic numbers who are even pushing them.seems to be very very good OC chip. i cant get over the headroom.
