CERN engineer Liviu Valsan recently gave a presentation on technology and market trends for the data center. At around 2 minutes into the discussion, he brought up AMD's Zen architecture with a slide that contained some previously undisclosed details (along with a few things we already knew).

Seems like the 32 core is basically a 2x 16 core CPU in a single die with an improved interconnection between the two CPU's. It's obvious the 32 core CPU won't be for the consumer market. I assume each CPU has a quad-channel DDR4 controller, so "8-way" in total.

It's not really news, but at least we get someone to confirm AMD's 40% IPC claims who isn't working for AMD.

would 40% bring them up to at least haswell power?

Close. Atm the gap between Piledriver and Haswell is 70%'ish in R15. It really depends how much of an improvement excavator made (the 40% IPC is an improvement to exca) and as far as this source is saying, the difference between PD & Exca is only 11% in R15 or 21% in C11.5.

Pretty much, yeah; 40% over EX puts Zen within a few percent of Haswell on average. Exactly how it will compare isn't known; Zen will probably have a very different performance profile than BD-derived archs, and clock speeds are still just conjecture (although it's supposed to be "closer to 4GHz than 2GHz", so it shouldn't be terribly low), but it should be pretty competitive with Intel from what we know so far.

Raven Ridge (the desktop CPUs) is supposed to come out later this year (I'm guessing around October), Zen APUs will come out next year.
