I wan to replace the default Ubuntu GNOME splash screen with one that isnt so... brown, lol. However, when I look at the splash screens on art.gnome.com, all I find are .png image files. How do I use them as my splash screen?

save it to /usr/share/gdm/pixmaps

or something similar and call it splash.png - it'll override the original if you do, so make a backup.

To change the splash screen just make a search for "splash screen" on Synaptic and install the little graphical interface (it's called Splash Screen or something similar). You can then use it to install the splash screens you get from the internet.
