Cheap walkaround lens

I made a mistake of selling off my XTi with the 18-55mm, and now I have the T1i and my closest lens is the 28-135mm IS USM. I need something dirt cheap for close range snapshots, and by dirt cheap I mean dirt cheap, preferably 2 digits. I'm about to buy another 18-55mm but then I saw the older 28-80mm USM, though I can't find any test shots of it to compare. Does anyone have experience with it?

It doesn't have to be those two. I'm just looking for a cheap close range zoom lens with slight wide angle like those two. I'll go up to about $150 for a fast motor. Also, I'm buying used.

I would just pick up another used 18-55 IS. Make sure it's the IS version, as it's quite good optically. You can get it used for $90-$100 at POTN or some such place.

And the 28-80 is crap, notoriously so. Stick with the 18-55 IS, which is the best you'll get for such a low budget.

The only other lens in your price range worth considering is the Canon 50mm f/1.8 mkII, and excellent lens for the money. However it's a prime lens, and a medium telephoto lens, something you may not be looking for.
a used 18-55 would be a good buy for what your after. Or buy a better lens and use your 28-135 as your cheap walk around..
I just found this Sigma 18-50mm: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-18-50mm-.../dp/B002DGXUQK

I've looked at some reviews and they seem to suggest that it is slightly better than Canon's 18-55mm. I don't mind not having IS, just don't need it at this range. However I'm a bit skeptical of the motor. I've used a cheap Sigma telephoto before and the motor was loud and horribly slow, but it had great quality for what it was worth.

I really trust Photozone.de reviews. Here are their reviews for the Sigma 18-50 and the Canon 18-55 IS:

If you look at the analysis page, it's a no-brainer. The Canon is sharper (by far) and has a lot less chromatic aberrations.

And the suggestions you read about it being better than the Canon 18-55 was in reference to the original 18-55 (the non-IS version), which was horrble in all respects, so it's not tough to beat. So as I said earlier, you won't top the Canon 18-55 IS for your price range. It's one of the best kit lenses out there.

And any lens without ultrasonic focusing rings (USM as Canon calls it, HSM as Sigma calls it) will potentially focus loudly.

The 18-55mm (IS/VR) lenses from Canon and Nikon are stellar for their price, especially at f/8. That really should be your walkaround lens.

What about the 28-80mm USM? I know you said it's crap, but I was referring to the original Japanese model with metal mount and full time manual focus (with similar looks to the 28-135mm and 17-85mm), not the newer cheaply made one.

Alright I'm picking up the new lens tomorrow (or later today technically) and it's not a 28-80mm USM or a 18-55mm IS. I made up my mind and decided to trade my current 28-135mm IS USM straight up for a 17-85mm IS USM. Just a bit funny how the guy I'm trading with has the exact brand/type of filter as mine and lens in pretty much the same conditions, with the Canon hood. Almost like a perfect match. Figured this is the best option since I've never really gotten to use my 28-135mm much and instead always going back to using the 18-55mm (non-IS) or the 70-200mm f/4L. For my use I guess it's just better to have the 17-85mm in place of both the 18-55mm and the 28-135mm. Besides, the 28-135mm isn't exactly light nor compact for a walkaround lens.
