ok I know this might have been done before but, I want to know what is the cheapest possible rig I could buy today? It has to include an os/monitor/keyboard/mouse.....

hmmm... Dell

And if you're talking custom build, do you mean decent, or just cheapest?

Agreed. The big-box OEM's can't be beat if they have a good rebate deal going. Try as we might, one overclocker can't get the same hardware prices that a Dell buying millions of parts can.

The reason OEMs are so cheap is that they generally use onboard gfx, or really crappy cards like 6200s and 7300s. That and REALLY cheap PSU's. Like 250~350w non-brand PSUs.

OEM = The Devil.

An because they can order thousands of components at a time and get big discounts.

For maybe 25-40% more than the OEM you could build a good overclockable rig that can play recent games...two things cheap dells can't do.

Well at a super cheap level monitor and os are the most limiting factors. You would probably have to buy a used monitor and get an upgrade version of XP (You would need an older windows OS) or something. If you could stand that then you could probably build on pretty cheaply.

$479 with montior.

Similar build off of newegg would be about $500(including 17" lcd) , w/o video video (onboard video).

Oh, add $100 if you buy windows.

You can use pci-e video cards, they are cheaper now than agp of equal power. HDD should be sata too.
