What am I going to need to max out TF2 at 1680x1050 from the Nvidia line? I'm looking to go as cheap as possible, but still want to have reflect all, AA up, and the highest settings, etc. I've found several threads based on Q6600s and such, but nothing with a Q9550, so I'm wondering if anything will be different.

gtx 260 should work, i beleive its on par with a 5770 and i ran a 5770 maxed out all settings on tf2 at 1920x1200 and ran 60fps

no dude you should get the GTS250, 9800GTX(+), 8800GTS, or maybe a 9800GT. ALL will max TF2 with great frames!

I don't know about Nvidia, but my 4850 maxes it out at 1440x900. It doesn't go below 50fps.

Source games are more CPU dependent. I'd get a lower-end gaming card and use the money saved to get a fast CPU.

I wouldn't get anything less than an 8800 GTS/9800GTX or GTX+/GTS 250.

Well my 9800GTX+ can max it out, but to make up for it the fan spins pretty loudly. So I always reduce it because I hate the noise. Might want to put that into consideration.

I remember even my old card - 8800GT maxed TF2 fine at that res but a GTS 250 or 9800GTX+ should do.

My 8800GT gets ~70fps in TF2 at all stock settings at 1680x1050, 4XMSAA, 16XAF, all quality settings maxed. Hope this helps!

At 1024x768, yes.

At 1680x1050, you'll need more power for AA/AF + max settings

Ive maxed it out with a 6800gt, at 1680x1050...

GTS250 or the equivalent.
You can come close with a 8800gt, but I still had some FPS drops during heavy fighting. The 250 runs smooth pretty much no matter what. Lowest I ever see it go is in the 70's in 1920x1080.

TF2 is more CPU intensive... I had a 8800GT with a E2220 and I was getting crap frame rates in big fights with medium settings but now I have a Phenom Quad and I can max it at 1680 x 1050... still 8800GT

So get that

i play it 1280x1024 i could play with 2x AA and 4x AF it wasnt maxing the card either
