How to check if the card you bought is an original 9800GT and not another card with a bios of a 9G00GT? I'm asking this because i suspect that my 9800GT is a 9600GT.

Did you purchase it used?....not much you can do unless the guy is local, and you can prove its a 9600 GT instead of a 9800 GT to whatever payment service company you used.

There should be a serial sticker on the back of the Physical card, head to the manufactures website, or google it and it should tell you what it is.

I would just pull the HS and fan off and look at the actual GPU. You also should be able to run GPU-Z and see how many Stream SPs it reports.
ok i'll check the the sticker at the back.. its currently on RMA coz its crashing.. isuspect that its crashing coz it can't handle the clocks of a 9800GT if its a real 9600GT.. i bought it brand new from a shop but theres a chance it might be scam or a mispackaged product by the manufacturer.
Run things like GPU-Z/free? Not 100% sure I understand so if you say more?

Why did you RMA it instead of exchanging it at the store?

You shouldn't have RMA'd it. I would have taken it back to the shop and told them it was malfunctioning and that you want a replacement.

i brought it back the shop and RMA'd it... coz i was out of the 1 month direct change warranty.. so they sent it to the supplier and i'll wait for 3-4 weeks. and i think GPU-Z detects the card bios so if its a 9600GT with a bios of a 9800GT then it'll show as a 9800 on GPU-Z..

I'm pretty sure GPU-Z still detects the clock speed, ram and SPs. So if they are different it would detect it. But you can change the card ID to show upp as something else.

Yea I see your point but this would be major fraud. I do have a program that can change RAM SPD but I don't know so much about BIOS? The card is gone so you can't check many things so why discuss? BIOS is not SPD not sure what you suspect is even possible the way you say (BIOS) but I really don't know.

I mean I have a program with RAM I can rewrite SPD? But Bios? No does not work like that? Sorry someone explain why I am incorrect? I mean a Bios is a Basic Input/Output System So something needs to report to the BIOS the BIOS can't do on it's own.

Anyway too late now.

The 9600GT (650/1625/1800) has the same or faster clocks than the 9800GT (600/1500/1800).

What solid evidence do you have that makes you think it is a 9600GT instead of a 9800GT? Or are you just jumping to conclusions?

If the guy can reproduce a stock looking manufactures serial sticker, then hes Pro, and not just some average guy. I think however that this didn't happen and the OP is jumping to conclusions possibly.

Since you did a RMA, didn't they request a serial number? Even if the store bothered to change the sticker, they can't just swap the serial number.

Duckie is on to it not being a forgery. As I can make fakes the numbers must match and that can be harder.

As I said above, you'd have to be a pro to pull this off. Now you are just correcting yourself to not look dumb.

And falsifying SSN's and Documents can land you in prison for a very long time, not a very smart thing to talk about openly on a forum in case some Agents happen to use this board. All it would take is a subpoena to get your IP from the webmaster of this site and to trace it back to your location and then they'd have a hayday with these fraudsters.

Even if they went out and got serial numbers from other cards.... duplicate serial numbers can easily be traced by to the retailer after a few RMAs.

I think OP is just jumping to conclusions as he hasn't provided any evidence.

i might be jumping a bit to conclusions but i have some support. i googled the image of inno3d 9800GT and also checked the website of inno3d... the stock HSF(Accelero L1) of my 9800GT is the same as the 9600GT on their site and the PCB looks the same as the 9600GT on the site too. nothing really looks like the 9800GT. if im not wrong, the 9800GT pcb is longer right?

heres the site.

waaa.. wasnt expecting this to be this kinda thread.
It may be a non-reference 9800GT design. There are more manufacturers that do this.

Also if you take off the cooler is should say G92 on the chip. If it says G94 then it's a 9600GT.

Either way Gpu-Z should provide correct information about the SPS and chip.
