Choosing HSF, help!

929 Views 22 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  IntelConvert
Hello,

I am in need of new heat sink fan for my processor.

I was thinking about those:

CPU Zalman CNPS9500 For AMD Socket AM2

or

Thermaltake BigTyphoon 120 VX Retail

I would also like to know, the review says these HSF work with:
AMD Socket 754/939/AM2, but in 2 weeks I will get my 7750BE AM2+
will the HSF work with the AM2+?
thnx.

Those heatsinks are a bit outdated and somewhat expensive for the cooling performance they give. I don't know Israeli computer stores very well obviously, but you might want to look around to see if you can find a Tuniq Tower, OCZ Vendetta 2, Xigmatek HDT-S1283, or Xigmatek Dark Night... should be cheaper and cool better

If you can't get your hands on one of those, I would go with the Big Typhoon... it's better than the 9500 and is a fairly capable cooler

i like the Xigmatek Dark Knight

i love mine, keeps my dual core very cool and it cost me $40 USD, very inexpensive.

there is no physical difference between AM2 and AM2+ i believe, so if it fits the AM2, it should fit the AM2+.

correct me if i am wrong

correct, when looking for heatsinks am2/am2+ are the same, and the vendetta is a really good heatsink but it doesnt come with a bolt thru kit like the dark knight intelconvert suggested and yes it is a good heatsink if not the dark knight then i'd go with the vendetta and a bolt thru kit for about 8 bucks~

ok good, i didnt want to mislead him, but i was 99% sure

and the Xig Dark Knight does come with the bolt thru kit like Pepsi said. i used it when mounting my DK and its sold as a rock. the backplate helps support the motherboard cause bending and cracking can happen with REALLY heavy HSFs. the DK is NOT that heavy, but the backplate is really nice

make sure u get some nice thermal paste with it, but most HSFs come with paste. get something different IMHO, AS5, MX2, OCZ Freeze, etc.
thats a shame. have someone order it for u and send that thing to you! lol.

you won't be disappointed - the vendetta 2 is a solid performer

well, i got same kind of problem
i need to decide should i go for Noctua NH-U12P or Scythe Mugen 2? I would go for xiggy, if i could mount it to my mobo horizontaly.. I think that mugen 2 keeps temps little lower, but i dont know will the mugen 2 cool the cpu as good as it should, becouse i would have to mount the cooler to the smaller side of mugen2, so it would blow the hot air to back case cooler.

my Xigmatek is mounted so that the air exits the cooler toward the back of the case, where my exhaust fan is at.

which way do u want the cooler to face?
He's using AMD, which means there is only one possible direction for the heatsink to face. I believe his board has the mounting plate sideways, facing up. He needs a cooler that can be turned 90°, or be wide enough to put a fan on the side of.

I don't really have any suggestions for you, I'm not really sure of any heatsinks you can do that with, I'm sure someone else who is more knowledgeable on the subject would have a suggestion for you however.
thats unfortunate.

i cant really make a suggestion, sorry.

i have found the s-clip (which turns the cooler horizontaly @ am2) only from thermalright, so i bet that wont match with xiggy

get the thermalright ultra 120. w/e, popular one. or ill say get the Cool master v10.

if you'd look at my sig you would see Antec 300.
I don't think that the CM V10 would fit into it, also it's HUGE and cost a lot.

i think this will work. i have it. i thought i saw a customer review that said that or something.

quote from customer review: Pay attention to your board layout. My socket was pointing down which meant when I installed the air was either blowing down on my graphics card or up towards my PSU. It comes with a vertical bracket that lets you rotate it 90 degrees but my north bridge cooler blocked me from mounting it so I have to live with up pointing up.

Xiggy Dark Knight

Best bang to buck ratio I believe.
