Christmas upgrades

701 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mocha989
I am wanting to upgrade my processor, motherboard, and memory for Christmas, I am looking to stay either Intel, or go back to AMD, either is fine. My budget is up to $800.00 USD. If I stay socket 775, or whatever, I won't have to upgrade memory. So please just give me some recommendations!

Thanks in advance.

If it were my $800, and I had your rig, I'd continue saving. If you find your games aren't running well enough for your tastes, you might consider another GTX 260 in SLI. However I don't see a whole lot you can do with $800 to notice a large boost in performance. You could upgrade the processor to something like an e8500, but really I don't think it'll be a huge boost.

Thanks a lot for your input, I'm thinking of just getting a new dual core, and another graphics card.

The e8400 is probably the best bang for the buck. Most people can get them to around 4Ghz with some decent cooling. I can hit 3.8Ghz with my old (from the first week the e8400s were released) e8400 with a really small copper HS, the new ones can hit higher speeds at a lot less voltage than mine.

I say go back to AMD. You can get a really nice Mobo, Phenom II 940 core, slightly better power supply, and do a 4770 trifire for well under your current limit.
4770s ftw!

Thanks for all of your recommendations, I'm looking to go with the e8400 or e8500, can someone please recommend me a nice heatsink from newegg.com. It has been a while since I have been past stock cooler, and don't really know what the top-of-line is anymore.

I'd go for a Dark Knight. I got one at Fry's awhile back for $35. I'm idling at 25C w/ internet browsing at the moment.

Comes with a fan, which is nice.

Edit: I looked around newegg some and I think that is the best you will get for the $$. I couldn't be happier with mine

Yeah, you've got a pretty good setup.

If I were you, I'd throw an E8400 in there, and get a Mugen 2 or a Dark Knight. I'd also get a copy of Windows 7

Intel Core i5 750
Asus P5P55D deluxe or some other good P55 board (if you want sli get the Evga p55 FTW 200)
g. Skill rip jaws or OCZ Gold 4GB memory kit DDR3
keep your GPU unless you go with the evga board then get another GTX260
Oh and a Xigmatek Dark night with LGA1156 mounting hard ware

I'd have to agree with this setup, relatively cheap with top performance to boot.

The i5 components weren't out when I was looking to upgrade, and didn't see the need to go i7.But I would have gone this route also.

i7 is great for multi GPUs till i noticed the whole uhh evga p55 classified and such. my main concern right now is case. im going to get rid of my current HAF and then buy a new HAF pre powdercoated from performance-pcs.com

I kind of want to down grade now to LGa1156 but i have a feeling that would be a terrible choice
