As part of Psystar's partial settlement with Apple, all models of the company's Open Computer featuring preinstalled Mac OS have been removed from its Web site.

Looks like its final now.

Wasn't sure if this would be better in the Software or Hardware section, but since it deals with Mac OS I opted for Software.

This marks the end of an era. A very short one, but an era none the less.

Yes. An era where a company tried to get away with using another companies product against its license that it had to agree to..

Oh well. Maybe this will show Apple that people want machines for cheaper.. I myself would like to see a more PC like mac.. Maybe like $600, iMac~ish specs, not an all-in-one.

Yeah it just proves that people buy macs not for the software but for the logo on the hardware... Slap an apple logo on anything and theyl buy it.

two years ago my school bought a crap load of mac laptops for the 'classrooms of the future' project. All classrooms got smartboards and about 30 macs for every 2 classrooms and a mac for every teacher. A lot of other schools did this as well.

Not defending mac in any way shape or form. I despise mac in every way and I hate using them in school, but I'm just wondering where you get your information from.

I think he was referring to what Psystar sold, not Apple.

i've seen it multiple places but the first one i remember is from
http://www.tuaw.com/2009/12/02/psyst...-all-sold-out/

and these are just their machines not the rebel efi (which is still available for sale)
AFAIK they still sell computers with mac-like specs and simply include a copy of OSX with it. Its your choice to install the OS.

This is the issue though, OSX "cannot" be installed on non Apple systems or sold separately. Which is what Psystar was doing wrong in bundling their prebuilt systems with OSX.

Yes but they didn't install OSX on their systems they just sell the hardware with a copy of osx and the user installs it. The user is the one breaking the apples TOS when they install OSX on non apple hardware.

Actually this should be in hardware because the software part is a different lawsuit.
NOOOO! Fight Psystar fight!
I got to give Psystar props for trying this.

OS X can and is sold separately.

It's true it cannot be installed, legally, on non-Apple hardware, but OS X can certainly be sold via Retail without a system.

They can still sell their pre-built compatible computers, and just include a copy of OS X. That is no different at all from someone buying one of their computers and then going to Fry's and picking up a copy of OS X.

All this proprietary software and pre-built nonsense is the second best reason I have to stay away from macs (first is outrageous prices). I commend Psystar on trying to show apple what they could gain by selling more pc-like systems with OSX installed. Unfortunately, as someone has already mentioned, if it doesn't have the logo and fresh scent of smugness, you won't attract many (which, imho, just goes to show how little appeal the OS itself has). Apple was making money from the sale of the pre-installed copies anyway, maybe psystar should have sold a few more
.

That being said, legally speaking, Apple can't lose. I mean, it was pretty much a blatant violation of license agreements, etc. Psystar will be lucky to come out of this with a penny in their pockets.

I wonder if anything will happen to those (alleged) 800 systems that were sold?

All the people saying it can be bundled with the computer, if it was that simple, don't you think people would already be buying it and just installing it? The issue is, osx CAN'T be installed on non-apple software without a chip/software that tricks it into installing. Which is not allowed by Apple TOC and i beleive is illegal to do.
I want some one to build me a cheaper or equivalent price 27" iMac as a PC. ($2,000)

  1. Must include a 30" LG H-IPS panel LED backlit (All new/current apple monitors and iMacs use LED Backlit LG H-IPS screens).
  2. Must have a 1TB HDD
  3. Must have an i5 CPU
  4. Must have 4GB DDR3 1066Mhz RAM
  5. Must have a 4850HD 512MB
  6. Premium Motherboard
  7. Premium Power supply
  8. CD/DVD Super drive
  9. One firewire 800 port
  10. 4 USB ports
  11. Bluetooth adapter
  12. WiFi adapter
  13. Premium Quality Mouse and Keyboard
  14. Premium webcam(Quality of New iSight)
  15. Sleek and sexy case
  16. Software package equivalent to iLife

I want some clueless noobler to attempt this. It's not possible, apple is not overpriced, and apple does not make junk.
