WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Three major electronics manufacturers have agreed to plead guilty to a price-fixing conspiracy and pay $585 million in criminal fines for their roles in the pricing of LCD display panels, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

The department announced the charges following a settlement with Sharp Corp. of Japan; LG Display Co. (LPL) of South Korea and Chunghwa Picture Tubes of Taiwan.

The charges were filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Calif., and announced by the assistant attorney general for antitrust at the Justice Department in Washington.

Brief.

does this mean i should hold out on my LCD TV purchase dreams?
No^

It means these three ahve been purposely keeping really cheap LCD's at higher prices to inflate profits, and they just got busted, will be made to pay a fine and the prices will drop HARD.

They don't even make quality products

EDIT:

In fact I wouldn't buy on of their products anyway, but they've purposefully been keeping a lot of people from buying new TV's and going HD.

EDIT 2:

Actually, my DVD drive is LG, noooooo
It was only £10.

Sharp!! =O
LG!! =O
...Chungwa Picture Tubes of Taiwan..

that last one sounds like it should have gone out of business in the 30's.
Don't forget that a few companies are actually producing the LCD glass for other companies.... so this may impact more than these 3 manufacturers.

I'll buy if the prices drop... I want a new TV for my room.
We might finally see some decent LCD TV prices now, as in we won't have to pay $1500 for a 720p tv anymore...

And you shouldn't anyway. My girlfriend got a 720p/1080i (yeah, I know) for £350, which is about $700.

Does this really mean prices will drop?

Did they admit that they are currently price-fixing, which would cause an immediate drop in prices. Or "only" that they have in the past when prices were much higher - which would have little impact on current prices.
