I have an opportunity to get into the Coast Guard Academy- Is anyone here currently or is a retired Coast Guard-er? Any words of wisdom?

I've heard the Coast Guard is a GREAT adventure. I knew a 200 tonne ships captain who was in the Coast Guard when he was younger.
BUT, like all military operations, if your commander is a jerk, your life can be a living hell.

I know compared to the army , the navy is more fun and nicer, so maybe its the sea life? So I would assume the Coast Guard to be similar.

@ Tyrker, I like the water. I row crew, so it's lots of fun.

I'm an avid diver. PADI Nitrox certified at this point. I've seen some rough diving. 8 foot swells with dense kelp forests at 45 degrees F, 10 feet visibility.

But, put me in a Heli in a storm? I would scream like a little girl.

Yeah, 6-8 blades rotating at well over 100 RPM is not fun, or safe

I guess it'd be nice to swab the decks

If you can put up fixed and regimented livestyle for 20 or 30 years you can retire with a good pension and still be young enough to enjoy yourself and start another career if you wanted to.....

As you probably know, they got a kick ass crew team. My high school's trailer was a couple down from them at Head of the Housatonic. But yeah I'd say go for it. The education is top of the line and i hear it's a great experience. I think it's pretty much the Navy, just with illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. Of course I'm just a sophomore who recently started looking at colleges so don't just take my word for it.

The Coast Guard is a branch of the military, and the service academy is as intense as the other branches', but tailored to teach you some of what you may be doing as a member of their service (such as arresting people-the Coast Guard is the only branch that gets to do that.)

I'd go for it, personally. You'll get a great education and guarunteed fun career.
