COD4, 2 PCs, router and only 1 can play at a time.

Hey, a friend and I are rooming together and we want to play COD4 at the same time in the same game server. We both have separate games and keys and are able to play in different servers at the same time. But when we try the same server the first person is able to join, but when the second person joins, it kicks the first person, who then can't reconnect. We're using a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I'm not very good at networking so feel free to assume I know next to nothing about router settings.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Are you using the same copy/serial key? If so you are getting kicked by PunkBuster and need to buy another copy of the game.

Its a server side setting I believe. Thats wierd that it does that though. CSS and other games at worst make the screen go black if anything. Maybe its a punkbuster thing?
nope sorry, you beat my edit tudj
I'm pretty sure he's trying to play lan, but I've had the same problem and no solution

Funny that you mention that. We tried 4 servers and were able to play together on 2 of them. Looking back, I think the 2/4 that we couldn't connect to were using promod. Any ideas if that could be it?

We're trying to join games hosted by other servers. We can play on some, but not all at the same time.

you probably need dynamic IP settings... your IPs maybe duplicates of one another allowing the server to deny the further requests fromt he same IP... is your setup just modem -> router acting as switch? or maybe you have a HUB... eitherway enable a DHCP client on the router...

Do you get any error message when kicked?

Our setup is modem ->router then hardwires to PC1 and PC2. We tried a hub at first which wouldn't let us do anything on the internet together so I was told to get a router. I got the router and we can do things on the internet now, just not the same COD4 server at the same time. Just enable a DHCP client? What all does that entail?

Nope, just the first person times out then can't rejoin after the second joins.

I'd rule out the game for now then, have you tried being on the same server in other games?

Yes I agree, but I don't know how to fix it. We've both played COD4 together for years, but now that we're under a common router it's not letting us join the same server.

I guess I'll have to look into the DHCP client as hellscream suggest. I just don't know anything about it

I'm pretty sure its an NAT thing most games wont allow the same IP adress in the same room and NAT makes it seem like you both have the same ip adress. I'm sure if you turned NAT off your problem would disappear. Of course that might be a security problem though.

Update: Well it turns out that we are able to join CS:S servers together and some COD4 servers together. I'll have to do more trial and error, but it seems that it might have to do with the Promod used by certain COD servers.

I also checked and DHCP is enabled.
ok i had the same issue, my wife and i both play cod4 together along with half of our gaming clan. i had to set the router into gateway mode under advance. it solved everything. it seems that cod4 is picky and when 2 comps are trying to run the game the router is trying to share ports, and when it cant it seems to split them up between computers. it gateway mode it acts like a switch, there for no sharing of ports.
